Rio Grande Valley MX: Drew Ward (802) nails the second-moto holeshot, followed by Kevin Falting (988), Blake Russell (24), Ricky Garcia (11) and the rest of the 80cc class in Brownsville, Texas. ed in the overwhelming registration line, and the food line was never short. Dirt Country has always had a great turnout of riders eager to challenge the Gravity Cavity and the wicked Widowmaker, but the facility has never hosted a crowd as large as this one. At the end of the day, in a race against the sunset, track officials decided to shorten the number of laps in the second set of motos to three, in hopes of completing the races. Being no stranger to this track, F&S Suzuki's Tommy Collier steadily dominated the 125cc A class. In the first 250cc A moto, Suzuki's Chuck Reed took the holeshot but crashed in the hair-raising first~turn action. Coming right behind and with nowhere to go, Collier ran over Reed's bike. Collier instantly noticed his exhaust was bent upward, but as Reed was remounting, Collier could not stop. Collier picked off riders one by one and took the win for the first moto. Reed finished second. The second moto belonged to Reed. He took the holeshot and never iooked back on his way to the win. Reed took home the 250cc A purse, and Collier finished second overall. The largest class turnout was the 60cc division. With 50 entries and no time for quali* fiers, officials decided to split the class by age. Team Green Kawasaki rider Tyler "Danger Boy" Bowers dominated both 60cc (7-8) motos. Kyle Smith, aboard his KTM. Y:-on first place overali in the 60cc (g-lI) class. Oak Hili's Jordan Strickland launched his King Cobra over anyone in his path. Strickland had no struggle winning both 50cc Senior motos. Thor/KK Motorcycle Supply-backed Bradley Baker won both motos in each of his Micro-age divisions. Rio Grande Valley MX Ward fends 'em off. By G.T. OBER BROWNSVILLE, TX, FEB. 27 Kawasaki-mounted Drew Ward was unstoppable as he dominated the 80cc class, the largest class of the day at Rio Grande Valley MX. However, the first-moto holeshot went to Kevin Faltlng, who put his KX up front and led the race for the first lap. Ward then made his move on Falting and never looked back. KTM· mounted Ricky Garcia was the next to challenge Falting. Garcia and Falting went at it hard, banging bars and swapping lines for the next two laps. By the fourth lap, Garcia had won that skirmish and was looking for Ward but Ward was too far out in front to catch. Garcia took second, followed by Falting, Blake Russell and Jon Mason Russell. The second 80cc moto was all Ward's. He pulled the holeshot with authority, followed by Falting and Blake Russell. Russell made quick work of Falting, but he could not keep pace with Ward, who went on to the win the moto with five perfect laps. Russell heid on to second place, and Falting was third. Garcia was a contender, but he stalled his bike on the third iap and fell back to sixth piace, where he finished. Michael Bauer took fourth, and Suzuki· mounted Shea Fouchek rounded out the top five. In the Open Beginner class, Miguel Marquez did it again. riding uncontested for 10 laps for the victory. Not far behind the winner, Matt Hoff also had a good day, going 2-2 for second. Blake Russell went 3-3 for third. During the first moto, Honda rider Kit Griffiths took a nasty soil sample when he lost control over the scoring~tower double, resulting in a DNF. Chris Thomas crashed out in the second moto and did not finish. Forrest Fonseca went 4-4, and Henry Penz put his Husqvarna in fifth. Results 50 P/W (4-8): 1. Bradley'BlIker (Yam); 2. Dirt Country Reed, Collier shovel on the coal By TA/IIMY BAKER BLANCHESTER,OH,MAR.5 Dirt Country's season opener was the sight of a craze of spring. fever. An early thaw brought out riders and their families and friends to the first motocross race in the district, setting a record of 450 rider entries. Starting early in the morning, the line at the track entrance seemed a mile long, filled with riders with a fever to race outdoors. Crowds patiently wait- 54 MARCH 29. 2000' eye • e n e """ s Buckley was also fastest off the line in moto two, disappearing from the competition. Stuart ran second. but when the Honda rider bailed off, the Bultaco-mounted Light held the number-two spot until the 15-year·old fell on the final lap and Stuart grabbed it back. Ken Burningham was next across the finish to net the Four-Stroke Vintage win, ahead of the Intermediate winner with 2-2 placings, HarleyDavidson rider LaFaye McCarver, and then Marty Welter (1-3) and second-moto winner Dean Newton (4- 1). Woodland Motocross Park Casey bats two out of the Park By CLAY LIGHT WOODLAND, WA, MAR. I] Joe Casey, riding a 1974 Honda CR250 Elsinore, toppled the competition in his return to racing, picking up a pair of wins in the 250cc and Over 30 Expert classes during Vintage Dirt-sanctioned Vintage Motocross at the Woodiand Motocross Park. While Casey had tough competition in both classes, the rider from Portland, Oregon. pulled away from all challengers in all four of his motos. Fellow Honda riders Larry Legarra and Chris Clark gave Casey tough times in the early stages of both 250cc Expert motos. but in each outing Casey enjoyed six- and 10-second leads on his way to nabbing the overall with a 1-1 sweep. Monty Price thumped to the head of the first Open Evolution/Open Vintage Expert/lnterme.diate class, and the Yamaha rider from Longview, Washington, was well on his way to an impressive victory when he fell. Price's crash left him out of action for the day, allowing Yamaha·mounted Kurt Stevens to nab a last*lap lead that he maintained to the finish, ahead of Maico riders Kary Krahel and Frank Campbell, who was the top-placing Intermediate rider. Stevens landed a holeshot in moto two. ahead of Greg Rodgers, Krahei and Clmounted Clark, but the two leaders - Stevens and Rodgers - put a large amount of ground on the battle for third place between Clark, Krahel and Kawasaki rider John Ulver. Stevens never relinquished his lead and took a 1-1 win, ahead of Krahel (2-3) and Rodgers (4-2). Clark's strangiehold on the numberthree position behind Stevens and Rodgers netted the CZ rider a win in the Vintage Expert portion, finishing ahead of Ulver (2-2). Husqvarna pilot Curt Calkins' win in the second Evolution moto garnered him the overall, ahead of Campbell (1-3), while Scott McAllister (2-4), Christopher James (5-2) and Alex Schon (4-6) filled the top five. Jesse Buckley demolished the competition with runaway wins in the combined FourStroke Evolution/Vintage and 250cc Evolution Intermediate classes, putting huge ground on a trio of 250cc Evolution riders - Jonathan Stuart, James, and Sean Light. 125 AM: l.
