Kawasaki of Durham's Bobby Stovall showed up at his favorite local track after a year's absence, got the holeshot in his first moto and ran off and hid, taking the win unchallenged. However, Stovall's sixth in moto two shot him down to fourth overall. Had it not been for a crash in the first turn of moto one, YZ400F pilot Jason Baldwin may have stood atop the podium. Baldwin, who recently moved up from the B ranks, came from the rear of the field to capture sixth in mota one, then came out smoking in moto two. Baldwin blasted the ahead of the la·rider field to capture his first 250cc Pro moto win. However, Baldwin did make the final step of the podium. In the first mota, Bengt Johansson took a clean holeshot aboard his booming YZ420 thumper. White stuffed his KX250 into sec· ond, while Jody Weisel pushed up into third. As the pack came through the scoring section for the first time, Ray Pisarski held fourth and Chuck Minert ran fifth. White took over the point in the back section on the first lap. Weisel followed suit during the next circuit, passing Johansson, Pisarski maintained fourth, while Tommy Pearl moved his CR250 up into fifth. Out front, White set a blistering pace, stretching out a seven-second lead by halfway. Johansson went back around Weisel to take back second. Alan Olson had hit the dirt on the opening lap as a result of some Bv JAV HAUSER SANFORD,NC,MAR.5 Devils Ridge Motocross started its year 2000 racing season with a bang, as more than 580 entrants from eight states and Canada donned their moto armor and went to battle. The large turnout, coupled with the always perfectly groomed race circuit, ensured great racing for the ma,ny spectators in attendance. Durham, North Carolina's Chad Newton, aboard a new brand of machine for 2000 . shiny red Hondas . dropped the bomb on the 125cc A class and romped away for a dou· ble moto sweep of the class. However, Newton's march to victory was anything but easy, as his longtime rival, SiTec Racing/Yamaha of Lubertons's Mark Wagner, kept "The Nuke" honest, though Newton just edged out Wagner both times around for the moto wins while the rest of the pack fought to fill out the podium. In the end, that honor went to Brewer Yamaha rider Chris Anstead with a 4-3 score. A-class newcomer Derreck Bell and Michael Milem were fourth and fifth. Locals Bobby Stovall and Brandon Turlington each put in one top ride, but nei· ther could match up two good results to stay in the top five. The 250cc A boys turned in a mixed bag of results throughout the day, which left every· body guessing who would take the overall. When the sun set, Anstead was all smiles; by finishing thjrd and second, he locked up his first A-class overall of the year. Wagner was again "Mr. Steadfast," knocking down another second-place showing by hovering within the top three in both motos. 58 MARCH 29, 2000' eye • early bar-banging, and he remounted dead last. By the time the contest had two laps left, he had charged all the way up to fifth. Making no mistakes out front, White continued to pull away, and he enjoyed a full 10·second lead when the white flag came out. When the checkered flag flew, White was the first to see it, and he took the moto win comfortably. Johansson came in second, while Weisel loped across the line in third. Olson gained one more spot on the last lap for fourth, while Pearl held on for fifth. At the start of the second moto, White blasted his White Brothers Kawasaki to a nice holeshot. Johansson again gated well and he ran second, while Audouard Xavier held third on his Honda. At the end of lap one, KTM rider Pete Vetrano was in fourth, and Horst Leitner filled out the top five. Once again, White established a pace that no one in the class could match, and he began to pull away from the pack at a clip of about one second per lap. Johansson was in control of second, while Pisarski was putting in some strong laps - he had moved up to third by the fourth lap. Multi·time Vet World Champion Olson was again charging from the back of the pack, and he was up to fifth late in the race. Once again, White didn't look back as he continued to charge forward all the way to the checkered flag for another convincing moto win. Johansson rolled in second, while Pisarski fin· ished up his strong ride in third. Olson claimed fourth, and Xavier filled out the top five. On the day, the overall class honors went to White by virtue of his perfect 1-1 mota fin~ ishes. Johansson was next best with his 2-2 scores, while Olson claimed third after putting in consistent 4-4 rides. Weisel earned fourth place by posting a 3-6 tally, and Xavier filled out the top five after going 7-5 on the day. Results Chad Newton (381) and Mark Wagner (395) stayed this close all day long during 125cc A racing action in Sanford, North Carolina. e n e vv s 80 BEG: I. Nick Waterhouse (Hon). XR100 ADULT: I.
