AMA Technosel Carolina Ultra Series/AMA USA Mega Series Round 1/2: Camp Coker Motocross Park By BARBARA WILLIAMS PHOTO BY LOREN WILLIAMS SOCIETY HILL, SC, MAR. 11-12 "From the sublime to the ridiculous" describes the difference in climate from one day to the next at the opening round of the AMA Tecnose I Carolina Ultra Series. Saturday's balmy temperatures blessed AI Lane Yamaha's Daniel Tesh, who ruled all four 125cc A and 250cc A motos. Sunday's wintry blast chilled Suzuki of Gastonia's Jim Chester but didn't slow him at all, as he dominated the 250cc A and Over 25 A classes at Camp Coker Motocros5 Park, just outside Society Hill, South Carolina. Tom Welch of Charlotte Hall, Maryland, spoiled Chester's 5weep by hanging on for the 125cc A win by inches at the flag. This weekend also served as round two of the AMA USA Mega Series, an area qualifier for the AMA Loretta Lynn's Amateur MX Nationals, and a District 29 race. Stock Day on Saturday drew some 250 riders, which swelled to 560 on Sunday. Saturday night's thunderstorm dumped gallons of rain on the already well-watered track. However, Hank Moree's sand facility has always drained well, and the excess water was not a problem. Chester covered the 125cc A field of 13 on the first-moto start, with Tesh and Welch close at hand. Tesh pressured Chester for the lead. When Chester fell on the last lap, Tesh took over briefly. A few turns later, the sand grabbed Tesh's front tire and he also crashed, clearing the way for Welch to cruise to the moto win. Tesh pulled the second-moto holeshot, ahead of Welch and Chester, while Brian Lane and Shawn Prather tangled in turn one. It took a long time, but Lane finally remounted and simply rode, out of contention for a top-five moto finish. Welch passed for the lead on the infield obstacle section. Tesh was maintaining second and staying well out of Chester's range when his Yamaha dropped into the wrong rut and threw Tesh to the sand. "The bike landed on top of me," Tesh laughed in disbelief. "I couldn't move to get it off!" Tesh was unhurt, except for his pride. Tesh remounted almost a whole lap down, but his first-moto second was good enough to give him sixth overall. Chester began to hunt down Welch. On the last time over the tabletop leading to the last turn, Chester was on Welch like a duck on a June bug. Welch wa5 able to keep Chester from launching into the final whoops, a move the Maryland rider knew would be impossible to overcome. Chester's finish-line charge was thwarted just enough to keep Welch ahead at the flag by the width of a Dunlop. Chester took the lead in the first 250cc A moto, with Welch and Tesh tucked in close to his south end. The two Suzuki riders pulled away from Tesh, who stretched out a nearly equal advantage over the rest of the field. Welch's beefy RM250 took him right up to Chester's fender on the last lap but quit just as Welch was about to go for the lead. Chester put it on autopilot for the first-moto win. John Boruff came up with the second-moto holeshot ahead of Tesh, Chester and Casey Barnes. Halfway into the first lap, Tesh passed for the lead. Chester also passed Boruff and set off after Tesh. With a lap and a half to go, Chester slipped into the lead and immediately began to pull away from Tesh. Chester came across the finish line first, followed by Tesh, Boruff, Ben Rutledge and Rutledge's teammate Brian Lane. Chester handled the Over 25 A crowd with little trouble, sailing to both moto wins for the overall victory. Rutledge and Billy Liles traded runner-up spots, with Rutledge getting the better finish because of his second-moto advantage. Liles also shared moto wins in the Over 30 A class with Champion Cycles' Jamie McCoy of Kingsport, Tennessee. A late-race roll in the sand gave McCoy the advantage over Liles and put the Suzuki rider far enough back that Mark Williamson of Wilmington, North Carolina, took second with 4-3 finishes. Michael Church (25) of Elgin, South Carolina, was third overall, and Liles (1-6) earned fourth. Liles put together two perfect motos to take the Over 35 victory. Church, Ron "Wirehead" Jones, Keith Nevers and Rick Catuccio completed the top five· fast company indeed for anyone who thinks the Vet classes are a piece of cake. eN Camp Coker Motocross Parte Society Hill, South Carolina Results: March 11-12, 2000 [Round 1/2] Saturday 51 (4-6): 1.
