Daytona Beach, FL. March 5. 2000 Wrenchead.com National Road Race Series Round 1 : Daytona International Speedway Ed Cobb (223) was the top Amateur racer over the course of the CCS weekend, winning six races. edge, again lapping nearly two seconds faster than second place to win the five lap Amateur Middleweight Superbike by 9.239 seconds. This time Yamaha riders John MacArthur and Jim Pekowsky followed him at a distance, with Pekowsky moving into third on the Final lap. The most dominant performance came three races later in Amateur Heavyweight Superbike, Cobb piling up a 25.079-second cushion at the end of the five-lap race. John Dalton fought for, and took over, second on the final lap, with James Gaal moving up to third. Race 10 on Saturday was the Amateur Heavyweight Supersport, Cobb's fifth win, this one by over 10 seconds with Pat Mooney second, like Cobb, aboard a Suzuki GSX-R750. The battle for second lasted for the first four laps, then Mooney used his displacement edge to pull away from Yamaha R6-mounted John MacArthur. "Things are really going my way," Cobb said. "I've got one more race on Sunday, so I hope we can get out of here with six wins." That he did. In the final sprint race on Sunday morning, Cobb ran away with the Amateur Middleweight Supersport, MacArthur moving up to second with considerable distance to a fight for third that went Michael Offie's way. Though Cobb and Manusuthakis took the largest number of wins, there were a number of other multiple winners, especially in the Amateur ranks. First among them was three-time winner Keith Sanderson of Leicester, England. The Englishman's first win came in the Amateur SuperTwins race where he rode his Ducati 955 to victory over Suzuki-mounted Kevin Norris and Michael Wingen. Sanderson then won the Amateur Lightweight Superbike, riding the same Suzuki twin he took to victory in the Amateur Lightweight Grand Prix, where Williams Siemens was second and Andrew Abel third. Alan Nelson used a similar Suzuki twin to win the Amateur GT Lights and the Amateur Lightweight Supersport. It was also the weapon of choice for Steve Keener on his way to win- the R6 was the weapon, with Manusuthakis holding court over 45 others, including Shane Prieto, who came up 1.945 seconds short at the end. Honda F4 rider Nelson Perez was third. When Manusuthakis wasn't burning up the Expert classes, Ed Cobb was besting the Amateurs who likely didn't have the same learning regimen he had. The Performance Powersports Suzuki rider said his first races took place in a shopping center parking lot. He, and a group of friends which included former factory rider, and fellow Georgian Mike Smith would gather in a parking lot after hours, set up a race course with traffic cones, and race 60cc and 80cc motocross machines fitted with street tires. "These parking lot races are sort of big productions," Cobb said after one of his wins. "We videotape them and everything. It's surprising how much you learn racing those small bikes. We slide them, get crossed up and all the rest. I give Mike (Smith) a run for his money, but I'd say he is the king of the parking lot races. Mike has helped me a lot." Cobb put that help to good use this weekend. Over the course of the three-day affair, Cohb won six times, the first coming on Friday and the final one on Sunday morning. Cobb's first success came in the red-flag-truncated 30-minute Amateur GTO on Friday. The race only lasted five laps, instead of what should have been around 15, and Cobb was at the front when it ended, using his Suzuki GSX-R750 to beat Yamaha Rl-mounted John Stapleton. The 30-minute Amateur GTU ran full term and it gave Cobb time to flex his muscles. His average lap time was nearly two seconds a lap faster than second place finisher Ronny Camilo, who took over second on the ninth of 15 laps, and he won by 28.420 seconds. Third went to Jim Pekowsky, like Camilo, riding a Yamaha R6. On Saturday, Cobb maintained his 10 MARCH 15, 2000' eye • e nevvs ning the Heavyweight Sportsman and Expert GT Lights races. In GT Lights he beat fellow multiple winner Robert Fisher, also a Suzuki 650-twin rider. Fisher returned the favor beating Keener in Sunday morning's Expert Lightweight Superbike. He'd earlier won Friday's Expert Lightweight Supersport, beating Paul Netterstrom. Frank Stroman used a couple of punched-out Kawasaki twins on his way to double victory, first in the Lightweight Sportsman, on a Kawasaki 510, and secondly on a Kawasaki 597.
