Results: Febl1l8ry 26-27. 2000 By TONY ALESSI VICTORVILLE, CA, FEB. 26-27 Q"'iIeam Yamaha of Troy-backed UJustin Buckelew stopped Bobby Bonds' win streak by posting the 125cc Pro-class victory during the CMC/SunStar Sprockets Golden State Nationals Series Championship weekend held at Badlands Raceway. "I am here this week to try to get back in the groove," said Buckelew. "Even though I have been qualifying for all the Supercrosses, I haven't done that much racing for the past two years because of the injuries, so now it's time to get back at it." Buckelew battled with teenage sensation Bonds early in Sunday's 125cc Pro showcase, but Bonds settled this debate by passing and pulling away from Buckelew for the first-mota victory. "There is no doubt that Bonds is real fast," Buckelew said, "but I think I am faster early in the race, but my arms pump up; I have to slow down." In the second mota, Buckelew grabbed an early lead and, within a lap or two, he was able to distance himself from the other racers. Bonds started poorly due to a misshift off the gate, and he was running near the back of the pack on the opening lap. Then he laid it over in a turn just after the start of the next one. Bonds was back on pace with the leaders in just over three laps, but a late-race scrap with Nathan Woods ultimately cost Bonds a shot at Buckelew and the overall victory. In the end, Buckelew scored the mota and overall win, followed by Bonds, KTM riders Woods and Jimmy Lamastus, and NCY rider Kevin Johnson. Bonds returned and scrapped with senior statesman Spud Walters during both 250cc Pro races, but in the end Bonds prevailed to score his second class championship of the series. Team Thousand Oaks Yamahabacked Michael Blose accomplished the goal he set during the previous round and came out the series champion in the Schoolboy division. However, Blose found Ross Garcia to be "up to speed" during Saturday's competition. "I didn't know what got into Ross this weekend," Blose said, "but he was flying out there." Justin Buckelew (158) toppled Bobby Bonds' win streak by taking the 125cc Pro-class victory at the Golden State Nationals showdown, but Bonds still took the 125cc Pro victory on Saturday and the 250cc Pro victory on both days, thereby eaming the title in both classes. Garcia went on to win both Schoolboy motos during Saturday's competition, but on Sunday things came apart for Garcia, who hails from nearby Apple Valley. "Well, I guess some dirt got through the air filter and messed up the cylinder," Garcia said. "I had to borrow a bike on Sunday from Daton Beavers, who got hurt and couldn't race." Blose came back and owned Sunday's Schoolboy event, topping Cole Siebler, Shane Bess and Saturday's winner, Garcia. Former Team Suzuki Mini star Bess used a pair of second-place finishes on each day to earn the 125cc Intermediate crown. R.J. Thompson capped off a perfect Golden State Series in the 250cc Intermediates with overall victories during both days of competition, topping a talented field that included Turbo Reif, Tim Weigand and Warren Tittlemier. The Mini classes wound down with some predictable overall finishes and some surprises. Team Suzuki's Kyle Partridge was consistent throughout the series and finished off the series undefeated. Team Thousand Oaks Yamaha/ KTM-backed Mike Alessi posted an eight-mota sweep of both the 80cc (711) and 60cc (9- 11) divisions, leaving the series as the only minicycle double class winner. Team Yamaha's Jimmy Nelson handled the aocc (14-16) class, while Team Green's Sean Collier used steady, consistent finishes to earn the Supermini title. Future Team Green rider Dustin Pipes earned the 60cc (0-8) class title and was surprised when he discovered he had won a new KX60 being raffled off by Thousand Oaks Kawasaki. World-class Pee Wee rider Tanner Krahenbuhl ended his series on a positive note with a win on the final day of competition in the 50cc (4-6) age division and the series championship over title contender Bryce Stewart. eN Saturday 50 (4·6): 1.
