CMC SunStar Sprockets Golden State Nationals Round 4: Badlands Raceway By TONY ALESSI VICTORVILLE, CA, FEB. 20 eam Thousand Oaks Yamaha racer Michael Blose moved one step closer to the CMC Golden State Championship title with another victory in the 125cc Schoolboy division during round four of the series, held at Badlands Raceway. However, Blose found the opening moto a bit of a challenge, to say the least. "Well, Shane Bess got out to an early lead and just started to pull away from me," Blose said. Bess was a surprise participant, as a tangle with teammate R.J. Thompson during the previous round nearly put an early end to his season. "Last week, I thought for sure my thumb was broken," Bess recounted, "but after a few days it straightened up and the pain went away, so I am here today to try and win again." And win he did, despite falling on the last lap. "I didn't really fall," he said. "I just came into this turn and braked too late and stalled it. Luckily I was able to start it right away and still go on to win!" Blose ca me in a close second. "My lines just weren't coming together this moto," Blose explained. "There was big kickers in the turns, and it took me almost the whole race to get it clicking." In the second moto, Blose rocketed to the front and left the rest of the field in a wake of dirt, mud and rocks. "I just kept it on," Blose said, "and I think Bess and a few guys went down in the first turn." "I think I got hit from behind," said Bess. "All I know is that ,. wanted to win, so I charged as hard as I could." Bess was rewarded with a wellearned third in the final moto after passing some 15 different riders en route to second overall, behind class winner Blose. T 32 MARCH 15. 2000 cue I (Top) At the Badlands Raceway, R.J. Thompson (59) took the 250cc Intennediate victory with 1-1 perfonnances. (Above) Michael Blose (82) took another victory in the 125cc Schoolboy division at round four of the CMC SunStar Sprockets Golden State Nationals. (Left) Dustin Pipes (532) won both 60cc (0-8) motos for the class win at the Victorville round. Bobby Bonds continued his dominance in the Pro ranks, despite missing practice. "I went to Perris today, but the track was flooded, so we jetted up to Badlands and got here in time to ride the last two laps of late practice." That's about all the practice Bonds needed; he went on to destroy the Pro field anyway, taking all four motos in both 125cc and 250cc Pro classes aboard his Buddy Morgan-tuned FMF Honda machines. Team Suzuki's Thompson kept his own win streak going in the 250cc Intermediate class with another picture-perfect 1-1 finish en route to taking that class title. e neVIl's "R.J. is on a roll, that's for sure," said Suzuki amateur team manager Cole Gress. "I think he had like a 10second lead on the first lap." In the end, Thompson used a pair of holeshots to propel him to a pair of 20-second-plus leads and a dominant class victory over Pete Kasten and Team TRE-backed Tim Weigand. There was no catching Nevada's Jimmy Nelson today, as he roosted away to a four-moto sweep of both the 80cc (14-16) and Supermini classes. Nelson and his FMF Yamaha topped Sean Collier and Shane Kelly in the 80cc (14-16) class, and Chris Norr and Collier in the Superminis. Dustin Pipes was on fire today, Winning both motos of competition in the 60cc (0-8) class after series point leader Donnie Kearney crashed in practice and broke his leg. "Little Don came up short on his double-jump section during practice and broke his lower leg," explained Don Kearney Sr. "He will be out for about six weeks." Pipes topped Jake Lacey, who showed superfast speed today, and Richard Sterling. eN Badlands Raceway Victorville. California Results: Feb",ary 20, 2000 IRound 4] 50 (4·6): 1.
