Fans of the man often recognized as the best ever - Britain's much-loved road racing hero Mike Hailwood, who was tragically killed in an auto accident in \98\ - are now able to celebrate his memory through a new website launched by his widow, Pauline, in honor of what would have been his 60th birthday, on April 2 this year. "His father Stan assembled four massive scrapbooks of photos and press cuttings about Mike's racing career, which we've drawn from," said Pauline. There, on behalf of her late husband. Pauline received the award for Rider of the Century, to which he had been elected posthumously by the readers of Spain's largest bike magazine, Motocicllsmo. Sharing the limelight was equally legendary Angel Nieto, who received the Spanish Rider of the Century award • and in doing so stated that "Mike Hailwood was unquestionably the greatest rider of all time, both as a person and a competitor. There could be no other choice for this honor." In collecting the award. Pauline revealed that 'she will shortly open a 10-bedroom guesthouse called Hailwood Lodge, which she and their son David, who survived the accident, have developed on a 60·acre estate high in the hills above Marbella, about two hours from Malaga airport. "The house is filled with the many mementos of Mike's life and racing career which I've hung on to," she explains, "and it's in absolutely perfect off-read-riding country, with lots of trails leading through hills and valleys, as well as small bitu· men roads for road· registered bikes.
