Welch had a forgettable ride, but he had a much more fun one aboard his own RM250, grabbing Saturday night's 250cc A qualifier holeshot, with Walker close and Neese working to overcome a bad start. Tom sailed across the line first. Neese was second, with Walker close by in third. Walker absconded with the holeshot in the 250cc A main event, with Neese peering over his shoulder. For almost five laps, Walker held on to the lead by riding defensively, but once Neese got around and into clear air, the Greensboro rider was gone. Walker finished runner-up. Justus had also gotten a good start, and he diced with Walker for eight or nine laps, looking for second. On the last lap, Justus made good on a pass but didn't get away quickly enough to prevent a comeback by Walker. At the line, Justus was third. Tesh limped around the Lexington track, his knee throbbing. Welch rode a solid race in fifth, then advanced to fourth after Venuer tipped over in the tight right-hand tum just after the finish-line tabletop, a turn that develops a deep rut close to the barrel and can become a bottleneck. When Walker and Yentzer came over the tabletop side by side at one point, Walker got a little delayed in the rut. "I kind of stopped and sat there a while," related Walker. "Yentzer bumped into me and went down. Then I finally got going again. Maybe all it took was a little push!" Neese's dominance in the 250cc A class further extended his Indoor Winter Series points lead over Justus, who is the series leader in the 125cc A division. Neese sits second in 125cc A series points. eN Carlsbad Raceway: Tim Beatty (378) pulls the holeshot in the combined Pro/lntermediate class in Carlsbad, California. Tom Welch (Suz): 8.
