CMC Golden State Nationals Round 3: Perris Raceway By TONY ALESSI PERRIS, CA, FEB. 13 fl]0bby Bonds continued to wreak L.!.Jhavoc on the Pro ranks, once again trouncing the competition in both the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes during the third round of the CMC Golden State Nationals, held at Perris Raceway. WeI was the most popular word in the pits, after numerous winter storms kept moisture flowing throughout the greater part of the day. Nevertheless, Bonds blew away all the top Pros. "The kid is superfast," said the 250cc Pro runner-up, Spud Walters. "He is definitely going places if he keeps it up." Not even hired gun Ben Riddle could get the job done. "We heard they brought Riddle here from Kentucky to beat us," Bonds said. "I think 1 had like a 40-second lead on him in the 125cc class." "Bess was going fast," Blose said, "but it's hard to pass someone who is going as fast you are; you kind of have to wait for them to make a mistake." And that mistake did come later in the day, when Bess collided with another rider in the 125cc Intermediate division and broke his thumb. "I am pretty sure it's broke," he said. "It's bent pretty far back, so I will be out for the rest of the series." Blose returned and raced mostly unchallenged in the final moto to score the overall victory in front of Team Green's Ross Garcia, hard charger Steve Mertens, Nate Jones and Pro Circuit's Justin Mace. Team Suzuki/Simi Valley Cycle's R.J. Thompson swept the Intermediate divisions, making a clean sweep of all four motos in both the 125cc and 250cc Intermediate classes. Thompson turned lap times close to those of the top Pro racers all day long and went on to top Blose, TRE- Bobby Bonds, back in action at Perris Raceway for round three of the CMC Golden State Nationals, where he shot down all the top Pros on his way to victory In both the 12!5cc and 2!50cc Pro classes. . BONds blows 'EM AWAYi In the end, Bonds topped both 125cc Pro races, over Japanese racer Kuraudo Toda, New Mexico's Kevin Johnson, fast starter Gerrit Ordelman and KTM racer Jimmy Lamastus. Of that group, Lamastus stayed the closest to Bonds all day, staying a quarter of a lap behind him in the second moto of competition and finishing that moto in the runner-up spot. The 250cc race was more of the same. This time, senior Pro Spud Walters took second after an earlymoto battle with Riddle. "Riddle was going good," Walters said, "but once I passed him, he just dropped off." "I just started riding again like two weeks ago after my injuries from the Mini a's," Riddle said. "I will be in California for another week with my manager, Cole Gress from Suzuki. Just watch next week - I will be ready to win." Riddle topped rookie Pro Jonathan Shimp, Taka Atsuta and Kevin Johnson on the day's overall score card. Some of the day's closest racing came in the Schoolboy and 125cc Intermediate divisions, in which Team Suzuki's Shane Bess made his first and possibly last - appearance of the series. "Well, I have been out with a broken tailbone for the last few months," Bess explained, "and then we had to get all of our testing done, so we missed the first couple of rounds." Bess did serve notice that he was here not only to race but to win, as he shot down class favorite Michael Blose in the first Schoolboy race. 80 (12-13): I. Kyle P.rtridge (502); 2.
