The third moto was another battle between a French rider and Smets. This time, it was Demaria, racing for the Yamaha team, giving chase. Showing his once-a-year brilliance, Demaria sat on Smets' tailpipe for the complete second moto and never let up. The huge French crowd loved Demaria's resistance, still though, it was not enough to stop Smets from going 1- 1- 1. The final top 10 for that last moto was again comparable to the first two motos, with Demaria second, Bolley third, Maschio fourth, Karlsson fifth, Giesbers sixth, Pichon seventh, Vincent Turpen eighth, Serge Guidetty ninth, and Peter Iven 10th. Of course it was not Smets and Everts alone that gave Beaucaire a taste of what's to come in the year 2000. The French resistance of Maschio, Demaria, Frederic Bolley and Pichon came to their local track with high hopes, and the support of their countrymen. Demaria, Maschio, Pichon and Bolley - four Frenchman in the top five. Not bad. Missing in action on the French Riviera was World 500cc Motocross Champion, Andrea Bartolini. Racing again for the Rinaldi Yamaha camp, Bartolini finished with no points after combining 38th-, 16th- and 30thplace finishes on a badly bent YZ426. Bartolini started the day well, though, holding down seventh place after one lap of the first moto. Bartolini looked primed for some serious racing, but the day went bad from there. By lap six of the first moto, he was still in seventh place and making no ground on the riders in front. Then in a flash, the Italian crashed his bike into the hard-packed circuit. "My gears went, I had no gears and crashed," Bartolini said. "I hit really hard. It was a big one and I could not ride on." From the first-moto crash, Bartolini had another in the third moto, this time his machine was so badly bent, and the day was over for the Italian. "Another big crash," smiled Bartolini. "On this track you can get hurt, I'm still okay - just a little shaken, that's aiL" Also a little slow on at the French International was Sweden's Peter Johansson. Smets' KTM teammate finished a disappointing 17th overall after scoring just six points from a 10th place in moto two. His other race results were 36th in moto one and 35th in moto three.
