CMC Copperstate Classic Stadiumcross Series Round 1: Arizona State Fairgrounds @or---------------, (Above) Ed Foedish (326) flew to top finishes in the 125cc Junior and Over 30 Intermediate classes at the opening round of the CMC Copperstate Classic Stadiumcross Series. (Right) Josh Moraine (29) came from behind to take the overall in the 125cc Intermediate class at the Arizona State Fairgrounds in Phoenix. By ROBERT VAN OAMME PHOENIX, AZ, FEB. 6 osh Moraine took the overall in the 125cc Intermediate class, while Ed Foedish took the overall in the 125cc Junior and Over 30 Intermediate classes at the first round of the CMC Arizona/Bent Clothing/ROO/ Franklin £, Associates/YSA-sponsored Copperstate Classic Stadjumcross at the Arizona State Fairgrounds, with more than 250 riders from three different states in attendance. Michael Blose took the first 125cc Intermediate moto holeshot. Pete Oi Perna, Jon Kroeker, Blake Tirman and Peter Leo followed. Brad McLean went by Leo for fifth. While Blose separated himself from the group, Moraine moved up from 10th place all the way to fourth by the end of the second lap. McLean passed Oi Perna for third. Tirman slipped back a few spots. Kroeker went down, handing McLean second. Moraine passed McLean. Leo and Tirman battled over fourth, and Tirman made the pass in the rhythm section. Blose stretched his lead to over 10 seconds by lap six of the 10-lap moto. Tirman tried to pass McLean from the outside of the corner going to the step-up, but McLean took the line away going into the next turn. McLean kept protecting the inside line through the next half-lap, but when McLean used the inside line just before the back section, Tirman, from the outside, got a better drive and passed McLean to take over third. Blose took the checkered flag and the first-moto win. Moraine held on for second, followed by Tirman, McLean, Brandon Schlensig and Leo. Blose was once again in front at the start of the second moto. McLean 56 MARCH 1, 2000' c u e -. e was second, followed by Schlensig, Oi Perna, Moraine, Kroeker and Tirman. Oi Perna faltered, and Straub moved up to fifth. Blose was pulling away while McLean and Schlensig battled over second. Straub went by Moraine for fourth. While Schlensig kept looking for an opening around McLean, Straub started to show a wheel to Schiensig. Straub and Schlensig were playing tag in the short chute and into the off-camber turn, but Schlensig would not give in. Blose had built a 12-second lead when disaster struck; He miscued the back section and smashed into the ground. At the same time, Schlensig slid out in the first turn, letting Straub and Moraine by. Blose got up on his own but was visibly shaken. McLean now held the lead, followed by Straub and Moraine. Straub hounded McLean for a full lap before finally pulling the trigger on the start straight. Then, as the lead pack approached a lapper, Moraine passed McLean for second. Moraine moved into the top spot two laps later, sending Straub back to second. Tirman passed Schlensig for fourth. Moraine took the checkered flag five bike lengths in front of Straub in second. McLean held on for third, followed by Tirman, Schlensig, Kory Taylor and Leo. Kevin Harshman pulled the holeshot in the first 125cc Junior moto, with Foedish, Justin Vandenberg, Sebastian Losch and Gary Thompson in tow. Harshman led for half a lap until Foedish went by on the step-up jump. Thompson went from fifth to third as the pack completed the first lap. Foedish went wide coming onto the start straightaway on lap two and Harsh~an tried to squeeze underneath in the first turn. The two touched at the apex of the n e _ s corner and Harshman went down, ending his chances for a good finish. Thompson got hung up trying to get around the fallen Harshman, letting Vandenberg and Losch move up to second and third. Thompson was fourth, followed by Jason Lizarraga, Baron Holly, Nate Ramsden and Bryan Erhman. Losch went to the inside of the offcamber turn and got beside Vandenberg, who tried to control the inside line going into the rhythm section but bobbled, conceding second to Losch. Holly moved into fourth when lizarraga went down at the end of lap two. Holly attempted a pass on Vandenberg. As they ran up the start straightaway, they touched, but neither went down. Vandenberg controlled the inside of the first turn. Holly tried the slower inside line to the second corner but he stumbled coming out of the corner, allowing Vandenberg to squirt away. Then Holly messed up through the combination jump section and Thompson got by for fourth. Erhman passed Holly through the rhythm section, but Holly regained fifth at the end of the front straightaway. Near the end, Erhman went off the course, Holly fell down just before the rhythm section and Ramsden slammed down hard on the back section. Foedish enjoyed the moto win, 10 bike lengths clear of Losch. Vandenberg held on for third, followed by Thompson, Adam Hamman, Joshua Schuetta and Lizarraga. Losch grabbed the lead in the second moto, pursued by Thompson, Vandenberg, A.J. Petrucci, Foedish and Harshman. Vandenberg bobbled, and then Foedish passed Petrucci for third before the completion of lap one. Petrucci went off the course and had to let everyone go by before re- entering the race. Harshman and Hamman passed Vandenberg into fourth and fifth. Losch, Thompson and Foedish went three abreast into the first corner. Thompson tried to hold off Foedish coming out of turn two, but Foedish outpowered him down the back section to take second. Vandenberg moved back up to fifth when Hamman dropped back. Harshman passed Thompson for third. Vandenberg then got zapped by Schuetta at the end of the front straight. Foedish closed the gap on Losch and made the move for the lead through the combination jump section. Going into the next corner, Losch tried to come from the inside of the right-hander that leads onto the short chute, but Losch grabbed too much throttle, pulled a wheelie and then laid the bike down. Foedish finished first, followed by Harshman, Schuetta, Vandenberg, Corey Gutterup and Thompson. CN Arizona S_ Fsirgrounds Phoenil, Arizona Results: Februsry S, ZDDD (Round 11 50 (4-6): 1.
