Roulette every time you backed off the throttle. Burly front and rear disc brakes are more than capable of hauling in the big Sabre; most of the time, the front brake alone is sufficient. The Sabre changes gears nicely, and the clutch has excellent feel and action, too. There's not much in the way of instrumentation, but the basic information is there and easily readable. A large 4.2-gallon fuel tank keeps you from having to stop for gas every few miles, which is what it seems like on some of the other cruiser bikes I've ridden. Whenever the Sabre reaches the 145-mile mark, I reach for the reserve on the fuel valve; I can easily live with that. In case you're wondering, Honda will be offering many accessories for the Sabre, including billet floorboards, leather saddle and touring bags, and a ton of chromed gadgets. The Sabre is a nice addition to the Shadow family, but it is a little sad that the original Shadow A.C.Eo - a bike that came out in 1995 and spawned the interest in classic-style retro custom cruisers - had to be sacrificed to make room for it. But who knows, maybe someday the A.C.E. will reemerge as a re-retro.
