CMC SunStar Golden State Nationals Pacific Northwest Round 2: Exposition Arena BY CLAY LIGHT SALEM, OR, FEB. 13 haun McAlister made his trek from Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, pay huge dividends at round two of the CMC SunStar Golden State Nationals Pacific Northwest Region Series, as the Suzuki rider topped the 250cc, Vet (Over 25) Pro and Over 30 Pro classes to join Oregon's Mike Storm, who was victorious in the 125cc Pro class, in the winner's circle. McAlister, riding for FMF, Fox, Motion Sports and Arai, went six for six for his hat trick, although the former National number holder did encounter problems in both 125cc Pro-class motos, which the SMP/ Hillsboro Motorcycles-backed Storm dominated. Storm got out of the chute fastest and breezed to a 1- 1 win ahead of the day's surprise rider, 17-year-old Tyson Lacey. In what was only the Wolf Creek, Oregon, rider's third race as a Pro, Lacey narrowed the gap on Storm in both motos to place second overall with 2-2 performances, leading National number 76, Brad Hagseth, onto the podium. Hagseth finished third with 5-4 showings. "Man, I had so much fun," the softspoken Lacey said. "It's pretty cool to get paid to do this. It'll really help my dad out with the expenses, and it's a lot better than trophies." McAlister earned his toughest win of the day in the 250cc Pro class. The winner of the previous round, Ryan Leach, pressured the Idaho rider from the get-go to the checkered flag. However, it was Lacey who followed McAlister (1 - 1) to the finish to nab his second runner-up finish, ahead of Washington's Dan Moore (3-3). McAlister's first overall win was in the Vet (Over 25) Pro class. McAlister and Moore ran at the head of the pack in moto one, followed by Oregonians Tony Graves and Terry Hamness and Washington's Ryan Sweet. For seven laps, McAlister slammed the door on all of Moore's advances. Graves displaced Moore on the final lap, trailing McAlister to the finish. Graves and the fast-starting McAlister headed up the field in moto two, but McAlister controlled the tempo and took his first of three wins, ahead of Graves (2-2), Hamness (4-3), Moore (3-4) and Sweet (5-5). McAlister darted out front at the C start of the first 250cc Pro moto. Leach ran second, ahead of Moore, Lacey, Hagseth and Graves. Leach put pressure early on McAlister, hoping to force McAlister into an error, but the RM rider rode a flawless race to take a wire-to-wire win ahead of Leach. Moore finished third, barely holding Lacey at bay, while Graves finished fifth after slamming the door on his teammate Hagseth. Hagseth, who drove all night from a Canadian national arenacross to get here, flew over the bars and lost two positions at the finish as Hamness and Ryan Hageman overtook the fallen Washingtonian. McAlister and Lacey jumped out front at the start of moto two, pursued by Hagseth, Moore and Graves. Leach was buried in traffic and could only watch as McAlister pulled away. Lacey had his hands full with former and current AMA 125cc West Supercross contenders Graves and Hagseth, but the diminutive rider had an answer for all of the veterans' advances, and he finished the day with a second-place finish, behind the unstoppable McAlister, who breezed to a 1- 1 sweep. "My Suzukis ran so well for me today," McAlister said. "Everything just sort of clicked for me today. I couldn't have asked for a better day." Lacey used a 4-2 tally to finish second ahead of Moore (3-3), while Leach, who only mustered a sixthplace finish in moto two, netted fourth overall ahead of Graves (5-4). However, that was where McAlister's stellar day ended, as the Hondamounted Storm, a rookie Pro, blew away the competition in both 125cc Pro motos and derailed McAlister's chances of a four-class decimation. Storm put his red rocket out front at the start of the first 125cc Pro moto and was never seriously challenged in his wire-to-wire romp. Moore ran second in the early stages, followed by Graves, Hagseth, Lacey and McAlister, who for the first time in seven motos didn't land the holeshot laurels. Early on, Storm put huge ground on the Moore/Graves/Hagseth battle for second, but it was Lacey who was turning heads as he progressed to the head of the pack. Lacey passed the trio and set his sights on Storm, but Storm had a good thing going out front, and he won by a six-second margin at the finish. (Above) At the second round of the CMC SunStar Golden State Nationals in Salem, Oregon, Chaun McAlister (117) won the 250cc Pro, Vet (Over 25) Pro and Over 30 Pro classes, taking all of those victories by way of 1·1 perfonnances. (RightJ Only Mike Stonn (27) could put a stop to McAlister's streak at &position Arena, scoring the 125cc PnH:lass overall by way of 1-1 finishes - the biggest win of Stonn's Pro career so far. 80 (14·16): 1. Moore did his best to remove Storm from the point position in the opening moments of moto two, but McAlister engaged Moore in a heated battle for the number-two spot and the two tangled, leaving Lacey with the break he needed, and he seized the number-two position. Meanwhile, Storm had another good thing going out front, and used it to take top laurels with a 1- 1 sweep - which was not much of a surprise, since the Oregonian has dominated the class all season long. Lacey (2-2), Hagseth (5-4), Moore (3-6) and Graves (8-3) rounded out the top five overall.
