TRACY, CA, FEB. 6 e easoned veteran Jeff Pestana took the premier 250cc Pro-class win, while rookie Pro Craig Truglio topped the 125s at round two of the GFI Winter Motocross Series at Carnegie Cycle Park. Back on track after two consecutive rain-outs, the series drew more than 350 racers, and they were treated to ideal weather and track conditions. Nestled at the base of a towering mountainside within the Carnegie State Vehicle Recreation Area, the - motocross track is usually hardpacked and dusty, as hundreds of recreational riders come out to practice week in and week out. However, this weekend, after a recent deposit of 14 loads of sand, the AMP crew turned the track into a respectable race course that held up well the entire day. A 20-minute, single-moto format tested the Pros' consistency and endurance. Pestana, aboard a Clawson MotorsportsjA-Ride/Shift/Foxbacked Suzuki, also had to fight off the pain of a wrist injury suffered at the San Diego round of the AMA Supercross Series. The 125 Pro race started with a little miscue between the starter and gate-puller. As the 30-second board went sideways, the gate didn't fall until at least 10 seconds later. While all got off cleanly, Pestana got to the sharp right-hander first - but Kawasaki jockey Truglio exited the turn in front. Truglio opened up slight lead over Pestana, Paul Temmerman and Clint Shepard. Scott Davis, who got a bad start, had his work cut out for him, but the Yuba City resident was up to the test as he made a pass on Pestana and quickly chased down Truglio. Truglio turned it up as Davis gJ 58 MARCH 1. 2000' cue I approached, and the two distanced themselves from the pack. Davis put pressure on Truglio and made several pass attempts that he couldn't make stick. At about halfway, Davis took a high line as Truglio ducked low in a high-banked right-hander. As the two exited bar to bar, Davis went off the track while Truglio motored on, gaining precious distance on Davis. Though Davis continued his pursuit, when the white flag came out, he appeared content with second, knowing Pestana and Temmerman were a ways back. Truglio, on his Merced Powersport/Fox/George Holland/Scottbacked Kawasaki, took the welldeserved victory and picked up his second win since recently turning Pro. "I just messed up in the rut and slowed down a little," an exhausted Truglio reported. "He [Davis] got around the outside of me and we actually tangled bars. After that, I just started relaxing and tried to hold my lines. I think Scott got a little tired near the end." The Lamson Porting/TorcojFMFsponsored Davis, who had never ridden the track before today, felt good about his ride. "I just rode an easy practice, but I felt all right out there: Davis said. "There was a mix-up on the gate drop, and I got off in last place. I thought I could catch Truglio, but it e n e VV s themselves from the pack and closed the gap on Davis. On the far side of the track, Davis again took an off-track excursion, allowing Pestana and Truglio by. The race then became a duel all the way to the wire, as Truglio hounded Pestana lap after lap. While Pestana seemed to gain a little breathing room on Truglio in the whoop section, Truglio gained it all back on the far section of the track. This continued all the way to the checkered flag, with Pestana holding on for the win over Truglio. Davis, who appeared to go on cruise control after Pestana and Truglio passed him, barely held off Temmerman's charge. Temmerman was followed by Marks, in fifth. Pestana was obviously in pain after the moto, holding his wrist. "I couldn't push going down the hills because it hurt," Pestana said, "but I just rode smooth and reeled in Scott. He made a few mistakes and went over the berm. Truglio rode good, but in the whoops, I rolled in and then just pinned it and skipped over 'em. I think that helped me to stay ahead of Truglio." "I was faster than Jeff on the uphill sections, but he would gain about three bike lengths on me through the whoops," said Truglio. "A couple of times 1 almost had him, but it just wasn't enough."
