~jjJ:1 I[W._~ there was a bike about five feet high, jumping the whole creek. It was Brian (Garrahan), he just flew through the air past me." Blackwell was still leading, with Brian Garrahan and ISDE champion Shane Watts closing in on him. Jason Dahners, Roderick Kreiss, Kohler, Wesner, Edmondson, Eric Mashbir, Patrick Garrahan and Canadian Guy Perrett were following and were vying for the next leading positions. Visibility and traction, or the lack thereof, caused by both the thick, sticky mud and the steady rainfall, became the main obstacles racers faced on the first few laps. Somewhere before midway through the first loop, the leading riders made a wrong turn and course officials, pit crews and spectators were baffled by the early arrival of the first five riders through the scoring tent. "We were riding along a ridge-top, and somewhere I broke left when I shouldn't have," Blackwell said. "We probably didn't go a total of 75-100 yards before we picked up the trail again and were right back on the arrows, so we didn't think anything of it - the first time around." "It sounded like there were four or five of us who went the wrong way," Watts said. "It only took us about nine minutes to make the first lap." The next set of riders didn't start showing up until a few.minutes later. Edmondson was at the front of the group, followed by Mashbir, Perrett, P. Garrahan, Wesner, Kohler, Rob Zimmerman, Eric DuCray and Steve Silverstri. "I guessed that there was some sort of problem on the first lap," Edmondson said, "because I was kind of up with them guys, then they were just gone. I didn't see where they went. Then I came through three minutes behind." Many of the riders stopped in the pits at the end of every lap to exchange goggles. Others just tossed their goggles in the general direction of their pit spot, or towards a familiar face, as they continued sliding down the hill to head on to another lap. "There's quite a bit of mud out there," KTM's Watts said. "Things are slippery, but it's still a lot of fun." On the second lap, some of the early leaders discovered the mistake that they had made during the first lap. "I realized we had missed part of the track when we rode two or three miles of new track that I didn't remember seeing the first time around," Blackwell said. As the riders worked their way around the next few laps, it quickly became obvious that some areas of the nine-mile route weren't holding up. 2+2 Racing Team's course crew, led by George Hendrix, worked rapidly to set up detours, as needed, to get riders around terrain that became impassable. 6 HOurs 0# Glen Helen TEAM ENDURANCE RACE MAReH 26~1t September 9-10, 2000 Part of 2000 2 race series Race both 6 Hours and 24 Hours Race and receive discount off the 24 hour race entry! 2000 8:30 am 'til 2:30 pm 1 to 3 MAN TEAMS 6 TEAMS TO MAKE A CLASS 4 MILE COURSE Classes: Beg/Nov, Exp/Am, Sr. Vet-Beg/Nov, Sr. Vet-Exp/Am Family Team-ID required Business Team-Show business card High School Team-Show ASB card • • • • • • 2 bikes per team: 1 in impound, the other on race track.
