"As far as the new bike (goes), it's great!" said Ricketts. "I got the holeshot with no slack." The Mid-South champion led five contenders through a wooded loop section that curved alongside the start, and he laid out a new trail for the next mile. Gary Hendricks and John Maschino were close behind. The first lap lasted 26 minutes. Ricketts was in the lead for the entire lap. He stopped a couple of times to make a few adjustments but stayed out front with a minute lead on Performance Cycles and Accessories of Dalton/IMS/MSR-supported Hendricks, who came in second, and OffRoad Group/TM/Bridgestone/Race Tech/Xtreme-supported Maschino, who was directly behind Hendricks. Several 250cc/Open A riders followed Hendricks and Maschino. Cadiz Kawasaki/Pro Action of Kentuckysupported Timmy P'Pool was the next person through the score tent, but with adjusted time, he was in second place overall, and Dustin Gibson was in third. They were unable to keep up with the AA pace and dropped back slightly. On the second lap, Ricketts rode a faster pace and gained an additional minute on Hendricks and Maschino. Two minutes after Ricketts passed through the score tent, Maschino cruised down a steep hill and pulled over for goggles; Hendricks made a quick pass and slid through the score tent in second place, and their battle continued. "I passed Gary on a steep uphill," Maschino recounted. "[ was trying to catch up with Shad, but it seemed like he was pulling away. It seemed if I tried hard, then I started making mistakes. I just settled back and rode my own pace to battle with Gary." The third lap found the Pro class in the same order. Ricketts, Hendricks and Maschino were up front. They were followed by 250cc/Open A rider Gibson and then 200cc A riders Mike McCrea and Chad Froman. "Chad made me fly, because he took me by surprise on the second lap," said the Team Green/Bloomington Power Sports/Moose-supported McCrea. "I knew he had trouble on the start line, so I took my first Jap too easy." When Froman caught up to him, McCrea rode harder and advanced toward a better overall finish. On the fourth lap, Ricketts led by six minutes - with a flat tire. "[ came out on a field, and it was real squirrelly," Ricketts reported. Maschino came through next, but he stopped for goggles and gas, and Hendricks passed him just before the score tent. McCrea followed Maschino, and Gibson and Froman were the last of the top five on the fourth lap. The last lap brought the Sarge's Cycles/Oakley/Big Gun/Moose/Moderne Tire/Cycle Path-backed Ricketts one minute closer to the overall, despite his flat tire. To compensate, he rode wheelies, uphill and downhill, throughout the last mile-long stretch. "I really appreciate Sarge's Cycle for setting up the bike for me," Ricketts said. "This was the first time I rode it, and I liked it - especially the electric start." Second place overall went to 200cc A winner McCrea, while third and fourth were claimed by John Maschino and Gary Hendricks. "[ caught him [Gary] on the last lap, near a straightaway," said Maschino. "He got sideways in a rut and waved me by. [ didn't see him anymore. [ really like racing with Hendricks, because he's one of the nicest guys out here." Bloomington Power Sports/Cycle Path-sponsored Froman came through in fifth place overall and claimed second in the 200cc A class. He battled McCrea for about three laps but got stuck in a rut midway through the fourth lap, then proceeded to battle with Sarge's Cycles/Bike Pedlar/Pro Action of Kentucky-supported Gibson for the last lap. "I really want to thank Robert Patterson, the track promoter, for putting on a great race," Froman said. The Mid-South track was inviting enough to entice Four-Stroke C rider George Poulos to travel the thousand miles from New York. Four-Stroke A winner Clint Robinson watched Team Green's Harvey Whitaker lead for the first two laps. "Harvey ran off in a hole and got stuck," Robinson reported. Robinson took advantage of the mishap, stayed out of the rough stuff, and led his class by 11 minutes. "Jason [Dickey] and I swapped the lead several times today," said 250cc B rider Ron Skipper. "We stayed together the whole race until [ slid out and went down." Skipper fell back about a minute, and Sarge's Cycles' Jason Dickey claimed first place in 250cc B class eN and 19th overall. By W.H. Darrick Lucchesi was second, over Kendall Edgemore. Terry Bostard styled in the first Vet feature, winning out over former number-one cross country/motocross racer Eric Mashbir. Cameron Brink took third over Skipp Guinn, Randy Medley and Mickey O'Shaughnessy, with Ed McCoy ahead of Monty Ware, flu-stricken Jerry Brandt and Scott Mallory. In the combined 125cc, Women's and Mini race, Mike Newnham repeated from last year. Derek Cheney was second, over AI Correia and Blaine Willis, with Court Tiede fifth. Local Nick Davis topped the tiddler class, over Vince Guisande, Darryl Saville and Cary Tiede. Cera Horn was tops in the Women's class. In the Open and Over The Hill Gang race, Shaun Reed was the first to complete 12 laps. Mark Kerling took second, over James Stedying, Wes Thomas and Mike Sprenger. After a poor start, Randy Heim topped the OTHG portion, over Ed SPENCER BRENTWOOD, CA, JAN. 1 he dawning of the New Year brought out a sparse crowd for the 28th annual Tommyville Hangover Marathon. With a new 1 1/2mile track, a good mix of new winners and some of the same old crew, there was still a lot of fun at Tom Anderson's Sand Hill Ranch. Old-Timers and Vintage racers took to the track first. Cliff Bagot, Clayton Blood and Alex Jorgensen were the crowd to beat. Blood took the overall with relative ease, while Jorgensen had to wait until two laps from the end to make the pass on Bagot stick. Bob Fields finished fourth, with Steve Lawrence just in front of Peter Crowell. Jim Ingoglia, Gary Gallagher and Steve Parker rounded out the top 10, with Paul Bostrom - a certifiable Senior rider 14th. The Vintage portion was won by Joe Newell, who lapped the field.
