Bv stay right behind Joe Rogers. James Rogers was having the ride of his life, pulling away up front, as Sims gave chase with everything he had. On lap two, some cracks appeared in James Rogers' armor. His pace was greater than that of anyone in his class, but he was beyond his ability, and he came very close to giving it all away several times. Back in the pack, Shane Keenum was making up for his midpack start. He started lap two in eighth but made his move around Nathan Hollander, Jimmy Burnett and Schmidt to end the lap in fifth. James Rogers enjoyed a threesecond lead at the start of lap three, and he backed off his pace somewhat to regain more control. Sims seemed to have the track dialed in by the third lap, and he steadily closed the gap. Joe Rogers was battling hard to maintain his edge over Campbell, with the two racers never more than a second apart. On the white-flag lap, Sims was showing Rogers a wheel in every turn. James Rogers turned it up a notch, hanging it all out. Sims rode hard, but he could only watch as James pulled away. James Rogers took his firstever moto win, with Sims right behind in second. The 8year-old racer was the youngest in the field, and he had his work cut out for him, as he faced stiff competition from the Rogers brothers and 15 other young speedsters. James Rogers controlled the holeshot in moto one, with Sims i~ hot pursuit. Surprisingly, Victor Schmidt was third out of the first turn, with Joe Rogers and Brian Campbe)1 side by side heading for turn two and the rest of the pack in tow. James Rogers pinned the throttle landing off the first big step-up, drove hard to the step-up before the "Go Huge" tabletop, and caught unexpectedly big air. His landing was severe, causing his helmet to impact his crossbar pad, stunning the young rider for a brief second. As Sims closed in, Rogers came to and nailed the gas, maintaining his lead. Joe Rogers found his way past Schmidt at the end of the long back stretch to take over third. Campbell also moved by Schmidt to K 28 FEBRUARY 16, 2000· eye • e n e _ s hold Campbell off to take third, and Keenum came across in fi.fth. In moto two, James Rogers grabbed the holeshot. During lap three, Sims moved around Joe Rogers, taking second and setting his sights on James Rogers and the lead. James Rogers made another "on the edge" bobble, and Sims took full advantage of it and took over the lead. Coming around by the grandstands, Joe Rogers struggled a bit and let Campbell seize third. At the white flag, Sims let his smooth style carry him away to a small lead. James Rogers raced hard, but he couldn't close the gap. Sims came across first, and the win gave him the overall and the big trophy. James held on to second to take second place overall. Campbell took thiFd, which, combined with his fourth in the first moto, netted him the last podium position. In the first 250cc Beginner moto, Mike Edmonds grabbed the holeshot, followed by Aaron Bailey, David Moskat and the rest of the pack. Bailey moved into the lead on the second lap. Behind Bailey, a battle was raging between Edmonds, Moskat, Carson Ditsch and Matt Martin. On lap three, Edmonds went down. Ditsch piled into Edmonds, and neither rider could continue. Moskat took second and worked to catch Bailey. Martin found himself in third, Daniel Marks was fourth and Tom Tutrone fifth. Bailey took the moto win, followed by Moskat and Martin. Tutrone made a late last-lap pass on Marks to end up fourth, relegating Marks to fifth. Bailey once again put his CR in the lead at the start of moto two. Moskat led the chase for the leader, followed by Bryan Suter, Martin, Frank Topkovich and the rest of the pack. Martin passed Suter on lap two. After starting ninth, Ditsch found himself in fifth, behind Suter, by the end of the second lap. On lap three, Bailey maintained a slight lead over Moskat, Martin was third and Suter was fourth. It was cold, windy and wet, but that didn't stop most Mid-South riders from tearing up the trail, nor did it stop Shad Ricketts (on his brand-new Sarge's Cycles Suzuki DR400) from claiming the overall.
