well. The rookie took a commanding heat-race win
and that showed some encouraging promise of a
bright future for the New Me~co native. Buckelew
gated well in the main and was running toward the
front early on, but he faded unexplainably quickly
and finished eighth.
"' fumbled pretty heavily on that first lap and got
eaten up," a soft-spoken Buckelew said. "I rode
way to tight and pumped up and am pretty disappointed with that ride ..I've been living in California
and I'm going to move back to New Mexico and
get back into my old routine and see if I can get it
back. I'm riding well but I'm not putting it together
when it counts. It's all in my head."
Finishing a respectable ninth was Yahoo! Sports
holeshot award winner Mark Burkhart. Aboard an
AM Leonard/Sinisalo/Torco Oil-backed KTM,
Burkhart led the pack through the first turn but was
qUickly passed by several riders. Demarini's Travis
Preston was 10th while Factory Connection/
Amsoil's Chris Gosselaar followed in 11th. Heat

one winner Robbie Horton, who was involved in a
first-lap crash, finished 12th, while Kawasaki of
Mexico's Erick Vallejo rounded out the top 13. San
Diego winner, Motoworld of EI Cajon's Greg
Schnell crashed during the final and ended up 14th
with AM Leonard/KTM's Ryan Terlecki, IMS's Donald Upton and O'Neal's Jimmy Varis following.
TheEdgeSports.com's Brian McGavran qualified for
his first final and took 18th with Tony Amaradio,
home-state favorite Travis Elliot, Cory Bauder and
Rusty Holland rounding out the field.
