Buckelew gated well in the main and was running toward the front early on, but he faded unexplainably quickly and finished eighth. "' fumbled pretty heavily on that first lap and got eaten up," a soft-spoken Buckelew said. "I rode way to tight and pumped up and am pretty disappointed with that ride ..I've been living in California and I'm going to move back to New Mexico and get back into my old routine and see if I can get it back. I'm riding well but I'm not putting it together when it counts. It's all in my head." Finishing a respectable ninth was Yahoo! Sports holeshot award winner Mark Burkhart. Aboard an AM Leonard/Sinisalo/Torco Oil-backed KTM, Burkhart led the pack through the first turn but was qUickly passed by several riders. Demarini's Travis Preston was 10th while Factory Connection/ Amsoil's Chris Gosselaar followed in 11th. Heat BRIEFLY. •• one winner Robbie Horton, who was involved in a first-lap crash, finished 12th, while Kawasaki of Mexico's Erick Vallejo rounded out the top 13. San Diego winner, Motoworld of EI Cajon's Greg Schnell crashed during the final and ended up 14th with AM Leonard/KTM's Ryan Terlecki, IMS's Donald Upton and O'Neal's Jimmy Varis following.
