Rathbone managed to come around the tum in front of Hager. Rathbone seemed to be pulling away from Hager and selling his sights on Burnette, Meanwhile, Rochester came up to right behind Hager, challenging him. But time ran out, and Burnette took the flag, with Rathbone second and Hager third. In the second moto, Burnette gave a repeat performance, taking the holeshot once again, with Hager following in second and Rathbone third. Burnette got out front with ease and pulled a huge lead, while Rathbone tried to work on Hager again. Hager jumped the big step-up first, with Rathbone right behind him, but Rathbone jumped too far and his bike scraped Hager's helmet, and both riders went down. Hager was somehow able to jump to his feet and continue the race, but Rathbone stayed down. (Both riders were unhurt.) Burnette came home with first over· all, Rochester took the second podium position, and Hager was third. The night came to a close with the 125cc D race. Daniel Nathan got the holeshot to start the first moto, with Allan Whisnant and Chad Sharpe on the chase. Sharpe wasted no time and made a pass on Whisnant for second. Nathan, riding out front, almost lost control on the big step-up jump, but he regained control, only to have Sharpe make a pass and take the lead from him. Whisnant was hanging tight in second, and Nathan had trouble and dropped back to third. Smelling victory, Whisnant put all kinds of pressure on Sharpe, but Sharpe kept his line all the way and took the win. Whisnant followed him in for second, and Nathan was third. The second moto started with Whisnant coming out of the first turn with the holeshot. Sharpe and Chucky Bolick led the rest of the pack, with Sharpe really ietting Whisnant ~now he was back there. Whisnant lost it in a turn, and Sharpe flew right by. Bolick also made a pass on Whisnant as the latter was recovering from his fall, leaving him in third. Sharpe began to pull away, while Whisnant waited for Bolick to make a mistake. Bolick bobbled coming into the tum, but Whisnant just couldn't make a clean pass. As they came through the whoops, with Whisnant right behind Bolick, Whisnant tried to make the pass on the big double-jump but came up 34 FEBRUARY 9, 2000' Dye Sunrise Motorsports Park Simon, Burnett best Sunrise OTMX By ROCKY HASH ADELANTO, CA, JAN. 15 The Los Angeles chapter of the Oid-Timers Motocross Club got together at the rejuvenated Sunrise Motorsports Park for some racing. I e n e _ s REDDICK, FL, JAN. 9 Ronnie Tichenor aced all six motos in the 250cc Pro, Over 25 and Over 30 divisions at round two of the Unlimited Sports Florida AMA Series. Just over 500 riders from 23 states, as well as Guatemala, Canada and Puerto Rico, competed on the supercross-style course for Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda and Kawasaki contingencies. In the first 250cc Pro moto, Buddy Duffy led the 19-rider field into turn one, with Tichenor, Tyson Hadsell, Jeremy Shuttleworth and Chase Reed following. Tichenor, on his Performance Engineering/Moto Tess/Suzuki Sports RM. flew by Duffy at the end of lap one. Hadsell motored by Duffy on iap two, but Tichenor had already opened up a three-second lead. Duffy then experienced trouble and dropped out of the race. Shuttleworth fell. moving Reed, Tony Lorusso and Barry Carsten into a battle for third. With three laps to go, Lorusso forced his way by Reed, and Carsten closed to Reed's rear tire. Carsten slipped by on the final lap. Tichenor held on for the mota win, ahead of Hadsell, Lorusso, Carsten and Reed. In mota two, Tichenor rocketed into the lead. Hadsell, Lorusso, Carsten and Scott Carter gave chase. With a clear track in front of him, Tichenor checked out. Lorusso passed Hadsell on lap two, while Reed worked his way up after a midpack start. By halfway, Reed was in sixth, just behind Carter. Reed slipped by Carter on the next-to-Iastlap and started to ciose the gap on Carsten and Hadsell, but time ran out for Reed, and Tichenor took the second moto easily over Lorusso, Hadsell, Carsten and Reed. Tichenor later returned to dominate the Over 25 and Over 30 classes, controlling ali four motos. Pat Barton and Gaylon Dickson filied out the Over 25 podium, while Carsten and Barton filied out the top three in the Over 30 division. In the ] 25cc Pro division, Lorusso led the first moto from wire to wire over the 24·rider field to win by 14 seconds. Reed started in fifth but worked his way into second and held off Ryan Gould, Ronnie Renner and Carsten until the checkers. After finishing seventh in the opening moto, Hadsell rocketed into the lead to start moto two. That was all he needed, as he distanced himself from the pack to score the moto win. Reed started in second, with Renner, Oettel, Carter and Carsten close behind. Lorusso rounded the first turn about 12th. Lorusso picked off riders one by one, finally moving to fifth just past haifway. Reed, in second, had Carsten and Lorusso on his rear wheel with two laps to go. Lorusso made the first move, slipping underneath Carsten for third. Reed held off Lorusso, Carsten and Oettel. Reed's 2-2 tally topped Lorusso's 1-3 score, and he took his first major Pro win. Los Angeles County Raceway Edwards wrings out a win at New Year GP By GREG ROBERTSON PALMDALE,CA,JAN.9 Not one to rush things, Joshua Edwards took his time and slowly picked off the competition one by one to eventually claim the 125cc Beginner-class win during California Racing Club's first race of the new year, the Happy New Year Grand Prix, held at Los Angeles County Raceway. Brad Goolsby got his Yamaha to light up the quickest at the dead-engine start and grabbed the early lead over Mike Epstein, Jon Bender and Matt Ciccone. By the end of the opening lap, which encompassed both the redesigned Saddle Glen and J.B. Memorial tracks, Epstein held the top spot, followed by Goolsby and a hard-charging Sam Scanlon. Scanlon latched on to Epstein's back fender and for the next 15 minutes the duo slowly puiied away from the field in a great battle for the lead. Back in the pack, Edwards was picking off a rider every lap or so, until he was up into third place at the midway point of the 45minute race. Bender, who was now running fourth, settled into Edwards' pace, and the two of them started reeling in the leaders. Scanlon finally outjumped Epstein for the point position, and then quickly pulled out a five-second lead. Edwards inched closer to Epstein and then made the pass for the runner-up position with a little over 10 minutes remaining. With time running out, it looked like Scanlon was going to pick up his first win of the year on his new Honda, but Edwards had other plans and made the pass just before the white flag came out. Edwards blitzed the last lap to take the well-deserved victory with some seven seconds to spare over Bender, who was able to sneak past Scanlon for the second-place trophy. Epstein crossed the line for fourth, ahead of Goolsby and Ryan Peterson.
