I just saw the 2006 dirt-track schedule. What a kick it was to see Billy Grossi feaal" and "family orientated" that the title Can you please explain to me why the tured in the December 7 issue. Billy was a sponsor's commercial shows some hooker AMA can bitch about poor attendance, a straddling a dead guy, screaming "Damn it, real charger on the racetrack - and a great lack of sponsorship, and a dWindling numguy when he was out of the saddle. don't die." Nice. I'm glad I didn't have to ber of riders one minute, and then While the story might indicate that Billy explain that one to an eight year old. announce a national dirt-track schedule had a hard-luck career, nothing could be But the racing was awesome! with absolutely nothing scheduled on the further from the truth. The AMA has prove that the decision makers in the industurned its back on a huge market of loyal, try knew that Billy was one of the best. Archives Rule! hard-core fans. I remember one event that didn't end up top-five finish at Hangtown in 1978; he can't wait to get my copy and go to the being standing room only. The story on Billy Grossi brought you were dying of thirst in the middle of the Yamaha nsoo to the CMC Four-Stroke back a lot of great memories. Billy was a fun desert, a smart person would go to where Championship at Carlsbad in 1980. guy to work with and a great rider. In those the water is. This crap is getting old. Salinas, CA Kent Taylor via the Internet Appalling Ads I was appalled at the Amp'd Mobile commercial spot on the Speed Channel's airing of the World Supercross round in Toronto. Supercross is a family sport - all the manufacturers know that and live by it. Speed Channel and Amp'd Mobile should be ashamed of themselves for airing a commercial showing a scantily dressed call girl straddling a dead businessman on a motel room bed. How can I have my 6- and 10-year-old kids watching Supercross with me now? Nobody wants to drag Supercross down into the gutter. Motorcyclists have enough deadbeats to deal with. If I were Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha, or Kawasaki, I would pull all my advertising from the series until Amp'd Mobil agreed to never run ads like that again. They owe all their family viewers a huge apology. Am I the only one who is absolutely furious over this ad? Disgusted in Illinois. Crawford Erickson via the Internet More Grossi And Again showed "Pepe" Karsmarkers how much they disliked a Euro over here riding our Nationals, I was standing where Grossi went through the fence. A couple of us jumped over the fence and tried to pull his bike back, but the snow-fence slats had broken and stuck through his front wheel and spokes like a Chinese finger trap. We finally got it out onto the track and Billy rode off with slats flying and his head shaking. Keep it up Scott - I love it. Bill West Saint Petersburg, FL You know, I really hate to complain about next-day Supercross coverage, but come on, "Carmichael is really going after James Reed." Holy cow, are those really the best announcers they can find - yikes! Even though Cycle News does an outstanding job of covering the current events involving motorcycling, I must admit that 4 Grossi Again JANUARY 4,2006 • CYCLE NEWS Thanks for the great article on "Sugar Bear." I got to watch Billy Grossi on his Husky 400, Dick Mann on the BSA 250, and Brad Lackey on the CZ at the Salinas Sand Pit years ago, but I never saw anyone who hit the berms as hard as Billy Grossi that day, and he was on some sort of Sachs or DKW with the "funny front-end." That Husky dealer is Moore and Sons and John is still doing business in Santa Cruz. Thanks again for such a great newspaper. Michael Hasychak via the Internet Bored With Four As for the first round of the Supercross Series in Toronto, Canada, although it seemed like close racing with "Bubba" and Ricky Carmichael, I thought it was extremely boring with them and Chad Reed on four-strokes. The four-strokes, in my opinion, made the racing very boring to watch. Not sure if it is just me, but I thought they looked slow, turned slowly, etc., though I'm sure they were flying. I think the big four-strokes are boring to watch. I hope the two-strokes make a comeback. Garrett Landers Cincinnati, OH
