The Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course will now host two rounds of the AMA Superbike Championship, with a second "unique, season-ending shootout" round added to the schedule last week. As part of a five-year agreement with Mid-Ohio, the AMA Superbike Shootout (as the season-ending event will be known) is scheduled for September 29-0ctober I, and will feature a unique format and points arrangement. No details have been made available, but AMA Pro Racing says that entries will be limited and a special points structure will be utilized. "We are happy to bring an additional round of the AMA Superbike Championship to Mid-Ohio," said Scott Hollingsworth, AMA Pro Racing's CEO. "Mid-Ohio is clearly a fan favorite, and it makes sense to build on the success the track has established in its 23 years of hosting AMA Superbike events." Mid-Ohio will continue to host an August Superbike doubleheader, the Honda Super Cycle Weekend presented by Dunlop Tire, in addition to the fall finale. The midsummer race was moved from its traditional date for 2006 because of the conflict with MotoGP at Laguna Seca, but it is set to return to July in 2007, according to AMA Pro Racing. "We didn't want to simply add another AMA Superbike date to our calendar," said MidOhio president Michelle Trueman Gajoch. "We wanted to be part of something very special in the motorcycling community, and with the urgency of the season finale and the unique format that is planned, we think we've accomplished that. We expect it to be one of the premier events in all of motorcycle racing." Trueman Gajoch added that Mid-Ohio will continue with its comprehensive trackimprovement plans and that additional details will be forthcoming. In addition to a second weekend of racing at Mid-Ohio, the AMA also announced some date changes to the schedule that was released earlier in the season. The Infineon Raceway round will move from its original date of May 5-7 to the date vacated by the loss of the Pikes Peak round, May 19-21. And Virginia International Raceway moves its round up a week to August 18-20. The total number of AMA Superbike races in the I I-event championship remains at 19 - the highest ever.
