ace topping 159 others in winning the 25lap race over the 3.7-mile course.
The list of formidable foes heading into
the GP included KTM's Kurt Caselli, who
missed last year's event due to a broken
foot; Mark Tilley and Scott Meyers on
Yamahas out of the Temecula Motorsports
stable; and Suzuki's Michael Uipaglia, who
had already won the 12S and 250cc
Expert events, and veteran Hughes, who
had won the Open Expert class.
"I rode in '03," said Hughes prior to
the event, "but on the first lap I broke a
chain. I had to push it to the top of the hill
to someone's camp and borrowed a
chain, getting back under way far down."
He managed to catch back up "to
about fourth, about 40 seconds back, at
