~ Red Bull Last Man Standing
OFF-ROAD
ISDE veteran JeH Fredette strulfgles
up one of the mony difficult sectiOns.
For a while, Lafferty looked as though
he might be able to hang with Knight, until
a spectacular crash sent the factory KTM
rider back to the pits to repair a broken
headlight.
"I went to get a drink [from his
CameIBak], and as soon as I did that, I hit
a hole and next thing I know I was endover-end and trying to find the bike,"
Lafferty said.
Unable to make the repair, Lafferty
rejoined the race in fifth position, using
only his small helmet light, and began
working his way back up toward the
front.
Williamson now held the second-place
position, but he, too, encountered problems, with a derailed chain. This allowed
both Kanney and Lafferty to move by;
however, the Floridian was finally able to
get going in time to salvage fourth, just
ahead of KTM-mounted Billy Russell.
Nearly 12 hours after the morning
start, Knight found himself at the finish,
mobbed by a large and enthusiastic
crowd. Kanney crossed the line some 10
minutes later, with Lafferty coming home
in third. Williamson, Russell and KTM's
Patrick Garrahan rounded out the top six,
in that order.
Texan Cole Kirkpatrick was the last of
the 14 finishers, crossing the finish line
one hour and 10 minutes behind Knight.
While generators pumped out juice to
run the massive floodlights which lit the
podium, perhaps Red River Dirt Rider's
president Archie Taliaferro summed up
the nature of the race the best: "Off-road
racing is all about challenges and dealing
with adversity. That is what these guys do,
and that is why they are good. They know
how to handle adversity, they know how
to focus, and they know how to produce.
And that is why David Knight is the World
Enduro Champion. My hat's off to all
these guys."
