on Canet added the newly constructed
D
Horse Thief Mile in the Willow Springs
Raceway complex to his STTARS lineup last
season, and racers can't seem to get enough of
the roller-coaster track. The onty downside has
been the tracks' lackluster dirt section; however, round nine of the series featured a significant upgrading, with new berms and an
improved tabletop jump.
In heat-race action, Cameron Welsh and
Leonardo Bagnis went wheel to wheel for the
lead spot. At times their bikes appeared to be
touching as they leaned into the high-speed tum
one together. Bagnis has multiple supermoto
wins, as well as two STTARS championships,
series' top stars. Bagnis and Welsh battled hard,
but Bagnis couldn't make a pass stick, and Welsh
would be headed into the main event.
TIle Open main event started off with Welsh
out front and Bagnis looking for a way by. But
they wouldn't battle for long, as Welsh cracked
under pressure and threw away the lead with a
big crash in the uphill tum three. Bagnis collected
the win and a chunk of the IOO-percent payback
the class offers, not to mention money from

Opening-mota action saw Danny Gonzalez
win the drag race to the first turn, just ahead of
Gil Esquivel, Cody Stauffer and Pierce. Esquivel
dropped Gonzalez to second place, and Pierce
pushed Gonzalez back to third by the
completion of lap one. Pierce railed around
Esquivel on the following circuit and
immediately started to pull away. Craig
Tomlinson overcame his midpack start to
overtake EsqUivel for second place on the
penultimate lap. Tomlinson was actually
chipping away at Pierce's lead. but time ran out.
EsqUivel greeted the checkers in third, followed
by Gonzalez, Nick Mueller and Stauffer.
Pierce shot his Six Six One/FXlTRElO'Nealbacked CRF2S0 out of the gate in moto two to
establish the early lead, over Tomlinson, Kasey
Morris and EsqUivel. Tomlinson bobbled his way
back to fourth on the opening lap, while
Esquivel got around Morris for second. The
mota was all Pierce's, as he stretched his lead
to a comfortable 15 seconds by time the
checkers waved. Tomlinson reeled in EsqUivel,
