AHRMA National Post-Vintage Motocross Series Round 13: Carnegie SVRA Hey, Hey, Hey - Coupe! By MIKE VANCIL LIVERMORE, CA, OCT. 15 < ave Coupe slammed both doors and the trunk lid shut on the opposition at the famed site of yesteryear's Trans-AM events when the Post-Vintage motocross racers gathered for the Western Regional event hosted by the Santa Clara Riders Unlimited. The demanding course and the opposition didn't appear to slow the talented and personable Coupe; he even overcame a large share of mechanical difficulties in his quest. Coupe used Honda and Maico machinery in his three classes - the Over 40 Expert, 250cc Gran Prix Expert and 500cc Gran Prix Expert classes. After the start-line blitz, riders were expected to make a nearly 180-degree right turn to enter the course. In Coupe's six motos, he was only beaten off the line in the Over 40 Expert class - both times by Steve Parker, whose Honda proved to be a little faster from a dead standstill than Coupe's Maico. The patient Coupe waited for an opportunity, and each time, by midmoto that opportunity presented itself. Coupe made his pass on Parker stick and went on to win both motos. Maico man Don Garner's disappointing first-moto finish inspired him to greater effort in the second outing, so he ended up third overall via 5-3 performances. D Coupe's mechanical woes came to the fore in the first Gran Prix 2S0cc Expert moto. He shared the gate with three Intermediates and three Novices and wasn't challenged much for holeshot honors. Mostly, Coupe accelerated hard in the cushion off every corner, throwing dirt like a deranged Rototiller and flicking the bike at the crest of each incline on the west ridge of the track - until, that is, his shocks failed on the Honda Elsinore, forcing the tire to rub against the rear fender. His discomfort was obvious, and he was prevented from sitting on the seat even once. To say he earned that overall victory would be an understatement. He either found spare parts or a backup machine, and in the second outing he breezed to another holeshot and runaway victory. Coupe then dominated the starts again in the Gran Prix 500cc Expert class, which was populated with seven other very capable Experts, so there was no easy victory involved. The Maico-mounted Coupe shined throughout both motos, taking runaway wins in both. Taking the checkers next was "Mr. ConSistent," Garner, on a Maico. Jim Zack brought his Yamaha in for a pair of third-place finishes. It doesn't get much better than three victories in three rides! Southern California native Lendon Smith rode his 1981 Yamaha YZ to four moto AHRMA National Vintage Motocross Series Round 15: Carnegie SVRA Madrigal Takes Center Stage at Carnegie By MIKE VANCIL LIVERMORE, CA, OCT. 16 arry Madrigal put together four sensational rides on his BSA single during the 15th annual Mike Lightfoot AHRMA National Motocross held at Carnegie SVRA, and in the process he won both the Premier Lightweight Intermediate and the Over 60 Intermediate classes. Hard work by the hosting Santa Clara Riders Unlimited and a huge turnout of eager racers made for a very exciting day. Sponsored by AMS, the event commemorated the memory of member Mike Lightfoot; the club also honored SCRU Life Member Bill Rianda for his years of dedication. This season marks Madrigal's return after three years of recovery from injury, and his hard work to regain his former abilities was quite obvious. His four moto wins were impressive - especially in the talent-laden Over 60 Intermediate class, in which he had to overcome six other competitors. Another Premier-class rider who performed well was Randy Skiver, a highly successful flat-track and TT expert a couple of decades ago. Skiver - who still calls Snohomish, Washington, home - performed quite well on his 1965 and 1968 BSAs. In the Classic 500cc Expert class, Skiver got the holeshot, but Wesley Poole quickly Zipped by on a very fast 1960 Triumph. Poole nabbed L 48 the holeshot honors in the second stanza and never looked back en route to his second moto win, while Skiver earned a pair of second places. In their Premier 500cc Expert battle, neither Poole nor Skiver could get a holeshot, as Kelly Shane, on a very fast starting 1955 Ariel, beat them both off the line both times out. Shane racked up a 3-2 tally, while Poole garnered a 2-3 score, and they both had to watch Skiver get the checkers 'ahead of them both times. Kamil Ginter, a native of the Czech RepubliC, entered three classes on (perhaps unsurprisingly) CZ machinery, and in the ensuing six motos he scored four victories and two second-place finishes. He won all four motos in the Sportsman 500cc Expert and Open Age Expert classes. In the first moto of the I I-rider 250cc Sportsman Expert class, fast-starting Yamaha jockey John Roitinger got the holeshot. Before the end of the first lap, both Husqvarna rider Tim Nash and Ginter blew past Roitinger. Late in the moto, Roitinger had some real problems and was passed by CZ rider Terry Bentley, Honda rider Dave Coupe, and Bart Bast, on another CZ. Nash went on to win the first moto, with Ginter second. Roitinger didn't contest the second moto. Honda-mounted Tom McKinney absconded with the holeshot but faded early on, eventually finishing sixth. Nash won again and took the overall. Ginter scored another second-place finish. NOVEMBER 23,2005 • CYCLE NEWS PHOTO BY ASSURED PHOTOS victories in two classes: the Gran Prix 500tc Intermediate and Over 40 Intermediate classes, both of which featured heavy opposition. Husqvarna-mounted Michael Spratt scored a pair of second places to garner second overall Gran Prix Intermediate class, while a pair of thirds earned Maico-mounted Brian Essary second overall in the Over 40 \ Intermediates.
