Round 6 ~ OFF-ROAD GPR/AMA 0-37 Big 6 Grand Prix Series Heavyweight division and a third-place finish in the 2S0cc Expert class gives Harrison enough points to run both of those number-one plates in 2006. Ryan Abbatoye made a good charge in the 250cc Expert class despite hanging his Kawasaki up on the starting gate. "I started passing guys pretty qUick and worked my way through the pack," Abbatoye said. "Revelle and I battled for a couple of miles for second and then I made a do-or-die pass up on the ridges, where I almost died!" Morgan Crawford came out of his early retirement to claim the win in the 250cc Expert division, while Abbatoye lived to see second place, ahead of Harrison. The 0-200cc series championship came down to the wire, with Mathew Henderson and Jeff Trulove both in the hunt. Henderson knew he had his work cut out for him when he discovered his KX 125 was "feeling under the weather." Despite a third-place start, Henderson's chances qUickly improved when Trulove started dropping back with a front flat, and KTM rider Brent Harden also dropped off the pace with bike problems. Justin Morrow jumped into the lead, and Henderson knew if he didn't overrev his KX 125, the championship was his. "I knew I would seize the bike if I pushed too hard, so I just let off when I had to," Henderson said. eN By KANDY THORNTON PHOTOS BY TONY LAMPING Tim Weigand and Ryan Dudek top an exciting Prospectors Grand Prix he final round of the GPR/AMA District 37 Big 6 Grand Prix Series wrapped up at the 20th annual Prospectors MC California Grand Prix. More than 1000 riders turned out and were treated to a 9.Smile course that utilized Hungry Valley's 1-5 MX track and the surrounding hills and sand washes. With Kurt Caselli dominating the Unclassified and Four-Stroke Heavyweight events on Saturday morning, many assumed the GPR-sponsored, $3000 Team Race would be a Caselli/Daryl Ecklund runaway. But when Hahm Motorsports/Troy Lee Designs/Pro Circuit's Tim Weigand and Ryan Dudek, and Honda's Kendall Norman and Robbie Bell lined up, all assumptions ended. Caselli, Weigand and Bell started the race for their respective teams. Bell jumped the start and got hung up in the gate, pretty much sealing his team's fate, while Weigand nabbed the holeshot with Caselli nipping at his rear fender. "I knew if I held Caselli off as long as possible, Dudek would have a good shot T 44 NOVEMBER 23, 2005 • with Ecklund," Weigand said. "Unfortunately, I blew a turn and Kurt got by me. Then I stalled it and that was the end of it." The crowd became complacent and assumed that was the end of it when Caselli and Ecklund settled into first place, followed by the Weigand/Dudek and Norman/Bell teams. But like the old adage says, "It ain't over 'til it's over." When the leaders came into the riderexchange area on the fourth lap, the crowd perked up when Dudek came in right behind Ecklund. Since Weigand/ Dudek had pitted the lap before, they were able to pass the KTM team, which was forced to pit. "I found this sand wash at the end of the course that was pretty rocky, didn't see a rock, and did some flipping," Ecklund explained. "The rock just came out of nowhere. I caught back up to Dudek, but the crash tired me out." Weigand took over for Dudek and once again had Caselli sitting on his rear fender. "I took over in the lead and Kurt passed me," Weigand said, "but I passed him back!" CYCLE NEWS The race came down to the last lap, and the Caselli/Ecklund duo had to settle for second place, behind the Weigandand-Dudek team. Norman and Bell rounded out the podium in third.
