"I've been out for two months," he
said. ''The collarbone wasn't giving me any
trouble, just my arms pumped up a bit."
An eighth in moto one made the podium hard to reach, but he got off to a
third·place start and had a chance.
With three laps to go, Fowler, who
was still holding down fifth, had that final
podium spot in the bag, but on the hill he
messed up.
"I don't really know what happened,"
he said. "It was sort of choppy and wasn't
holding a bite and the handlebars just
came out of my hand. I almost fell to the
bottom of the hill."
He stayed on the ledge, remounted
and slipped to seventh in the moto and
sixth overall.
Canadian Julian Cerny moved into fifth,
but he was tiring fast.
"The track might've been too tight for
my 500, and it was wearing me out. If I
had been in better shape I could have controlled it. Instead, the bike controlled me."
Yet, when the checkered flag flew, he
was still closing on SqUires, who was closing on Gurnee.
"I wasn't even thinking about the overall," said Squires, who ended up going went
6-4 for third overall, nipping Cerny (5-5)
and Gurnee (8-3). 'J\JI I thought was five
more minutes and Iwould've caught third."
After finishing third in the first moto,
Gordon Ward was nowhere to be seen in
the second.
'" tangled with another rider off the
line, pinned it to eighth, then someone hit
me again and pushed me off the jump."
After dropping to about 20th, Ward
worked up to eighth, only to crash again.
Dubach stole the show on Sunday. For
the 12th time, Dubach won the Over 40
class championship, but not without some
opposition by former National MX champ
Jeff Ward.
In the first race, Dubach got the
holeshot, but Ward slipped by and controlled the first half of the race aboard his
Honda. Dubach pushed Ward late in the
race but couldn't make the pass.
"I was thinking of a place to try and
pass Wardy when suddenly the race was
over!" Dubach said. "I was a little surprised. I never saw the white flag."
In the second moto, Dubach nailed the
holeshot and never let go, even though
Ward was always right there ready to
pounce.
Ward ended up second overall, while
Fowler went 3-3 for third overall.
