silencers, which are actually almost too quiet, but have a nice tone just the same. After spending hour upon hour hammering around the Motorsports Ranch track, the only real complaint that I had was that the street-oriented tires were actually holding the Monster back from lapping even qUicker. This bike is truly a good set of tires away from being an amazingly competent trackday bike. It's always fun to be on the underdog, right? The thing that impressed me the most about the S2R 1000 is how versatile it really is. We have a Monster S2R 800 here at Cycle News and have been commuting and riding it on the weekends for months, so I'm quite confident in the S2R 1000's street credentials, despite not getting the chance to ride it on the road. Not to mention that we've logged numerous miles on the 1000 DS motor and are big fans of its versatility, durability and performance. You can't go wrong with the upright riding position on the S2R range of bikes. The comfortable seating position, neutral reach to the bars, comfortable placement of the footpegs, and wind-blocking ability of the bikini fairing make this bike very comfortable in almost any riding conditions. The Monster S2R 1000 not only makes a great allaround bike for commuting and weekend coffee-shop runs, but it is also much more than that. It packs some serious performance, from spirited canyon carving to the occasional trackday. As a matter of fact, I was quite surprised with how many of Nash's customers showed up to his trackday Monster-mounted. It just proves one thing about Ducati motor-cycles, and that's the fact, that they are performance-oriented motorcycles first and foremost, right down to the Monster range, and this bike is surely no exception. eN _ LIST PRICE $9995 DISPLACEMENT 992cc ENGINE TYPE Air-cooled L-twin four-stroke BORE x STROKE 94 x 71 .5mm COMPRESSION RATIO 10:1 CARBURETION EFI wi 45mm throttle bodies IGNITION Electronic TRANSMISSION Six-speed STARTING SYSTEM Electric FUEL CAPACITY 3.64 gal.
