mile track but aJso one of the premier motorcycle museums in the world. As if that weren't enough. there was also a swap meet. The variety of bikes on hand was stunning, ranging from 1930s-vintage Indians, Harleys and Nortons to 2005 Ducatis. AI Knapp brought his 1940 Harley-Davidson; he was 18 when this bike was new! Scott Olofson's brown leathers complemented his 1937 hand-shifter Indian. One of the more intriguing classes was the Triumph Thruxton class, a spec class based on minimally modified Triumph Thruxtons. The Thruxton is a modem version of the 1960s cafe racers and is based on the new Triumph Bonneville, which is very similar to the 19605 Bonneville. Round 18 was held on Saturday, with 34 classes contesting 12 races. Round 19 was held on Sunday, with an additional 12 races. In the Battle Of Twins Formula One class, Robbie Nigl, Mark Hatten and Douglas Scheer ran close for the first lap, after which Nigl pulled away, leaving Hatten and Douglas to scrap for second place. Early on, it appeared Hatten was going (0 take second, but Douglas kept the pressure on and passed Douglas for runner-up. On Sunday, Nigel once again disappeared off into the distance. However, Hatten, on his Wounded Duc Ducati, bested Doug1as for second. In the BOT Formula Three class, Kawasaki jockey John Staska and Bob Robbins, on a beautiful Ducati 750, were first and second on both days. However, Dan Hankie, James Weber and William Bewley had a great battle for third, fourth and fifth. On Saturday, Hankie and Bewley were third and fifth, respectively, but on Sunday they were fifth and third, leaving fourth to Weber on both days after some great, close racing. particularly through the back-straight chicane. However, the best and most intense racing of the weekend was reserved for the Thruxton-c1ass races. On Saturday, jay Springer grabbed the early lead, with Tim joyce in second. Steve Atlas, riding one of the factory bikes, mounted a frenzied charge from back in the pack to challenge Springer, who showed he still had "the stuff" and opened a slight gap on the last lap to win. joyce finished a close third, with Robert McLendon in fourth and Gary Nixon in fifth. On Sunday, Atlas had a "moment" during practice, and though some quick work by the Triumph guys put the bike back together for the race, Atlas had no practice time to sort out the bike, and he discovered it was down on power during the sighting lap. In brilliant sunshine, Springer took the early lead, with joyce and McLendon battling for second. McLendon managed to get by Joyce for second. Atlas struggled with the lack of power, but with spirited riding he finished fourth. Springer was fifth. In the 500cc Premier classes, Pat Mooney, David Roper and Ron Melton were racing their Norton Manx bikes against the legendary John Cronshaw, on a 1968 Unity BSA At the end of the first lap, Moony and Roper were leading Cronshaw and Melton. Cronshaw demonstrated his prowess by catching and passing Roper and then Mooney for the lead. Cronshaw didn't compete on Sunday, and Melton retired after one lap, leaving Mooney first and Roper second. ---- • World), GREATESTArlHlCn1S6 RIdt1T# .....lnIIINTIlRNATIDNAL .2'11 CI6S' . . . .,,,.,.
