WERA National Vintage Championship Road Atlanta Matthews, Mayfield Lead the Champions! By DAN SCHMITI BRASELTON, GA, OCT. 13 nder cloudy skies, and with. temperature in the high 70s, the WERA Vintage Championship kicked off with the SOOcc Gp, 2S0cc GP and Vintage One classes charging into the first comer. Mike Matthews led the first lap on his Honda 3S0, as David Rutherford followed closely on his BSA SOO single. At the checkers, it was the three class winners running onetwo-three: Matthews topping Vintage One, Rutherford topping the SOOcc Gp, and Phillip Turkington topping the 2S0cc Gp. U The championship is determined by the points from the best six finishes this season plus the best points from this double-point paying event. Finishing second in his class, Scott McCain took the 2S0cc GP championship. Matthews had a perfect 160 points and the Vintage One championship, and Rutherford also took the Soocc GP class. In Formula SOO, it was four-stroke 4S0cc Suzuki jockey Bob Weber beating the twostroke Yamahas of Bob Macaulay and Charles McEwan. In 3S0cc Gp, Turkington's Bultaco outran Doug Bowie's Ducati. Vintage Two saw Matthews take the twin-cylinder 3S0cc Honda ahead of the single BSA of Rutherford. Weber had a perfect score and the title. Bowie's second was good for the championship. and Matthews snatched his second title. Dale Burroughs took his 1100 Suzuki to a 10-second lead in the Vintage Six Heavyweight final, as 7S0cc Suzuki-mounted James Faber and IOOOcc Yamaha-mounted William Mayfield battled for four laps for second. In the Vintage Seven Mediumweight class, for the first four laps, J. Pat Bartlett, on the 250cc Yamaha, outran Bryan Nelson, on a 600cc Honda. Nelson held on in second, holding off the attacks from Paul Yates, on his 600cc Honda, and Dennis Gerber, on his 400cc Yamaha Dick Gruhn had his SOOcc Yamaha revving to hold off the challenge from Soocc Kawasakimounted Kith Burkingstock in the Vintage Five final, with the 600cc Yamaha-mounted Brian Summers holding down third. Tim Joyce led the Vintage Three portion of the race on his Triumph 7S0, running away from the 4S0cc Suzuki of Bob Weber. Gruhn and Burkingstock continued their conflict for seven laps. This was the battle for the title. Gruhn held on for the victory and the points for the title. Joyce brought his thundering Triumph over the line for the win and the title. WERA Sportsman National Championship Road Atlanta Battling It Out in Braselton By DAN SCHMITT BRASELTON, GA, OCT. 13-14 A fter competing a full season in the various WERA regional events and qualifying for grid positions, the winners of each race at the GNF earned the championship by winning the final event. The action started with Tray Batey taking the earty lead in the B Superstock Expert final. Robert Jensen took over the lead on the next lap. Three laps in, Jensen crashed, bringing out the red flag. On the restart, Batey, Brian Stokes and Mike Smith battled for seven laps. At the checkered flag, Smith took the victory and the title. The C Expert Supertock race was a knockdown, drag-out conflict, with Smith and Opie Caylor battling for the lead. During the sixth lap, Caylor grabbed the lead over Smith, with Chris Siglin in third. Shawn Conrad took fourth from Keith Marshall. At the checkers, Caylor had it by a bikelength. Conrad ran down and passed Josh Herrin in the C Expert Superbike final, but his lead was short-lived, as he went out and Herrin cruised to victory. In the Over 40 Senior Superbike contest, Scott Carpenter ran away with the Expert victory, with Wayne Watts second and Luther Wikle third. J.B. Layman took the Novice win. Lightweight Twins saw Ricky Ford take a very hard-fought Expert Superstock victory over Kris Wall and Rod Burr, as Cory Burleson ran away with the Novice race. Burleson also took the Novice win in the Lightweight Twins Superbike race, while Brian Suffridge snuffed 48 the competition in the Expert portion. There was a great two-man battle in the Formula Two Expert race. Avery Clark and Steve Brunton swapped the lead during the eight-lap final, as Robb Dixon charged into the Novice lead. Clark gained the lead coming to the flag and held on to the end. In D Superstock, Rod Burr stretched his lead and took the Expert win on his 800cc aircooled Ducati. The Novice winner was Benjamin Vest. In the Clubman final, Andrew Weiss ran away with the race on the booming Yamaha 681 single. The Novice winner was Chris Davey. Weiss took his Yamaha singte to victory in the Expert D Superbike final over the FZR400 of Ryan Nelson. Borg Larsen's RD400 outran Benjamin Vest's 2SOec Aprilia in the Novice race. Cale SWiger passed Brad Duncan and Tim Birdsong to claim victory in the Heavyweight Twins Superstock final. Scott Sheehan took his IOOOcc Honda to the Novice win. Stokes won $10,000 by winning the Heavyweight Twins Superbike final on an Aprilia 1000. Frank Shockley, also Apriliamounted, ran second. Sheehan again took the Novice win. As Ryan Elleby and Keith Marshall contested the Expert B Superbike lead. Brandon Parrish was working his way toward the front. At the flag, Elleby got the nod. In A Superstock, Smith and Stokes overcame the early lead of Ben Thompson to battle to the wire. Smith got there first. Smith stretched his lead on the back NOVEMBER 9, 2005 • CYCLE NEWS PHOTO BY ETECHPHOTO.COM It was a three-way battle for the lead in the Vintage Six Lightweight class, as Thomas Webster, on the 6S0cc Honda, held off the 400cc Yamahas of Borge Larson and Ryan Nelson. On one lap, Larson led; then Nelson came by; Webster split the two; but on the lap that counted, Larson was there. Behind this battle, Joe Pomery, on the 3S0cc Yamaha, outraced Scott McCain to take the Formula Two-Stoke win, and this earned him the class championship. Meanwhile, in the Vintage Four race, BMW-mounted Michael Kelly lost the lead he'd had from the start as David Rutherford and Roy Eaton, both on Ducatis, took the top two spots. William Mayfield charged into the lead in the Heavyweight Vintage Seven final on his 1000cc Yamaha, but he had Burroughs, on the 1I00cc Suzuki, right on his back wheel. As this twosome stretched out their lead over the field, Doug Glass moved his 900cc Honda into third. with the 7S0cc Suzuki of James Faber in fourth. Mayfield continued to lead, with Burroughs right there. With one lap to go, Burroughs charged ahead and held on to the checkered flag to claim the Victory. At the halfway point, Lynn broke away and began to reel in Smith. Two laps later, Byron Barbour charged to reel in Lynn, but at the line he had to settle for third. Michael Dillion took the Novice win, over J.B. Layman. Burleson and Charlie Cole swapped positions for eight laps as this twosome ran away with the B Superstock Novice final. Burleson took the victory. He came back and ran away with the C Superstock win, beating Layman to the line. Nick Scoggins and Burleson went back and forth for the C Novice Superbike victory; Scoggins took it by one second. In the B Superbike, Burleson beat Tony Palarie for the victory.
