he I 100 or so riders who
attended this year's 32nd
annual GPR/AMA District 37
Big 6 Gran Prix Series in
Ridgecrest were treated to
an 8. I-mile course that featured a traditional grand prix mix of off-road, asphalt,
motocross, and the spectator-friendly
mud bog, but only one team would take
home the lion's share of the GPR-sponsored $3000 purse - and that was the
local team of Ryan Abbatoye and Nick
Bruson pocketing the cash.
Fourteen teams lined up at the start of
the premier event, the Team Race, but the
field quickly narrowed when two of the
top teams experienced troubles right after
the start. The Temecula Motorsportsl
HjClGPR Honda team of Mark Tilley and
Mike Childress nabbed the holeshot and
quickly tapped out to over 90 mph on the
start-line straightaway.
The American Honda team of Kendall
Norman and Robbie Bell were closely following Tilley when Norman developed a
"mousse issue. n
"The tire lost the bead and some of
the wire became bound up in the chain,"
Norman Said. "It was very sketchy
because the bike almost came to a complete stop!"
With the Honda team down and out,
Abbatoye and Burson settled into second
place. But that wouldn't last for long.
With a collective gasp from the spectators, the Rrst-place bike, with Tilley on
board, entered the rider exchange area
with white smoke billowing from the
bike. Tilley handed off to Childress and
told him, "Just go as far as you can."
Unfortunately for them, Childress did
not get too far before the bike completely seized.

Abbatoye and Bu~n rode smoothly
for the remainder of the race and claimed
the dough. The Zip-Ty Racing team of
jamie Lanza and justin Lewis followed the
leaders home in second, while KTM riders
joey Lanza and David Rees finished third.
Abbatoye rounded out his successful
weekend with a first-place finish in the
250cc Expert division after battling for the
lead with Revelle Harrison.
"I got the holeshot and pulled a couple
of minutes on Revelle," Abbatoye said.
"But this is my first race back from an
injury, and I started getting tired. I then
hit the only rock in the turn coming out of
the junkyard straightaway, and Revelle
closed the gap."
Unfortunately for Harrison, there was
not enough time left in the race to make
the pass on Abbatoye. They finished first
and second, respectively, with Ty
Renshaw taking third-place honors.
Another rider who enjoyed multiple
wins over the weekend was Kendall
Norman, who ran away with Saturday's
UnclassiRed race and won a hard-fought
battle In the Heavyweight Expert division
on Sunday.
Venerable off-road racer and crowd
favorite Paul Krause held off the competition in the Over 40 Heavyweight division
to take the win, and he teamed up with
Elmer Symons to finish fourth in the GPR
Team Race. Krause currently holds the
number-one plate in the Over 30
Heavyweight division, but younger-gun
KTM teammate Revelle Harrison was able
to hold off Krause's early charge and take
Rrst place. Krause and Rick O'Donnell
rounded out the top positions in second
and third, respectively.
