there was the Kawasaki-mounted team of Mike and Tim Roth, Steve Hatch, and Matt Leach to contend with, not to mention the Pro Circuit Honda team of Andrew Short, Fowler, jeff Northrup and Timmy Weigand. When the Davis ''1\' team jumped out to an early lead. the pressure was on, with the Short team running hard in third. right behind Pastrana. But Pastrana would bailout early. Twenty minutes into the race, Pastrana highsided and crashed. "He couldn't remember where it happened," said track official Lori Bryant. "So he was rushed immediately to Loma Unda Hospital." Pastrana suffered a broken clavicle and underwent surgery to insert a plate and screw later that day. He would return the next morning to watch his team cross the finish line. Meanwhile, for over an hour, the defending champs led, but a rider change/gas stop gave Short's tearn the opening they needed to take over the lead, and they continued to extend their advantage for the next several hours. When Fowler took the lead bike and headed out, Davis was apprehensive. Davis' team had slipped to third, with the Honda factory foursome moving into second. '" do not want him [Fowler] to win and be the first five-time winner," Davis said. "He's been talking crap, and I'd never hear the end of it." Suddenly, the factory Honda 450X, which was running second, disappeared. Later, the bike reappeared, being pushed back to the pits. "Something poked a hole in the sidecase and we lost all the oil out of the tranny, and the tranny locked up," Hengeveld said. "It cooked the engine and that was it, just that quick." Instead of packing up and heading out, however, they did a complete rebuild that cost them nearly four hours and 16 laps. From that point on, they rode just for fun and to finish. Next, Fowler disappeared. Rumors spread that he had lost it over a cliff. Things were confused for a while, but Fowler, whose 40th birthday is just around the corner, said: "It got blown out of proportion a little bit. The rear wheel came apart up on the ridge and I didn't think anybody could get to me up there, so I cut through the brush to get down to the fire road." But halfway down, he came upon "a 50-foot cliff - a waterfall." He left the bike, reached the road and got word to the pits, and they used a rope to drag the bike out and back down. en it comes to a 24hour-long race, it's all about preparation, and if there's anyone who knows more about making things last, not to mention making them go fast. it's Ty Davis. For the last three years. Davis and his Montclair Yamaha squad have outlasted everyone at the HYR 24 Hours of Glen Helen race, which is traditionally the third and final round of Glen Helen's Endurance Series. This year. Davis wanted nothing more than a fourth consecutive win, but when he heard that Honda was going all out this year. he couldn't help but get a little worried. Honda came to Glen Helen armed with johnny Campbell. Steve Hengeveld, Robby Bell and Kendall Norman, so Davis reworked his team. Retaining the services of WOReS series leader Nathan Woods. Davis replaced last year's teammates Terry Fowler and Ryan Dudek with Bobby Garrison and Andy Bakkan. And that wasn't all - Davis put together a "B" team, made up of Willy Musgrave. Kris Keefer, Casey johnson and Nick Foister. And the Honda guys weren't Davis' only formidable foes; he also had the Travis Pastrana team to think about.
