Bv KAREN GOULD CHOWCHILLA, CA, SEPT. 25 oe Diaz and the Chowchilla Barnburner staff welcomed more than IS5 riders back to the track (or their first points race of the 2005 Fall Series, including the Wilson Motorsports team. Diaz did his magic, grooming the track on a bright new tractor; Glenda and her staff provided some great homemade food from the new snack shack; and the riders enjoyed a wider and longer J racetrack. Eleven races are scheduled for this series, which will run rain or shine through December 17. In January, the 2006 Winter Series will begin. this 16-riOOr class. Brandon Bergen got the holeshot in the first one, but on lap three KLH Presents/A&A's "Stingin' Stevie" 80nsey got past him, while Chuck Monasmith worked his way from seventh to third. Bergen held the second position from start to finish, while Jimmy Lewis traded places with Canepa for the third-place trophy. Bonsey took home the Open-class money as well, adding to his weekend's earnings after finishing second in the WCFTS Bakersfield race on Saturday. CH The racing kicked off with Roger Bowerman leading the Senior pack from pole to pole. Mark Biscardi was back to take his first win in the Old-Timers A event. Chase Hoffman had to work for his 50cc Stock win after finding himself at the end of the pack on lap seven. Christopher Torres learned the fast way around the track, leading the combined 65cc A, Band C classes to the finish, followed by Kevin AJcorn and Marcus Esparza. Another young rider lighting up this track was Briar Bauman, who took home the money in the Vouth 85cc money race, won the Four-Stroke Open contest and then finished at the front of the 85cc A class after nailing the holeshot. PHOTO BV JOHN BETHEA CMC Trans-Cal Nationals South Round 3: Starwest MX Park Slugfest at Starwest Bv JOHN BETHEA PERRIS, CA, SEPT. 25 or the second weekend in a row, Protec Yamaha's Travis Baker found himself enmeshed in tremendous battles at the CMC's 24th annual Racetech/MTA West Trans-Cal Nationals. This week he was ambushed by a speedy Canadian during round three of the South qualifying events at Starwest MX Park. After winning three classes seven days earlier at round two, Baker encountered stiff oppoSition from Dean Wilson right from the start in all six of their SOcc motos throughout the day, with the visitor claiming the Open win while Baker topped the Supermini class, with each winning a mota in both classes. The slugfest started in the first Open moto when Baker blistered his Alloy/Shoei!Torco/Smith Vamaha to the holeshot. Before the lap was completed, however, the 13-year-old Wilson had mounted a challenge, actually getting a wheel in front but unable to complete the pass. Frustrated, he trailed by no more than two bikelengths the rest of the moto. However, revenge was his, as he got the holeshot in the second stanza, with Baker doing the hounding this time from the outside, making his own foiled attempt at a takeover in turn three. A spill on the second lap dropped Baker to sixth, and he was only able to get back up to fourth, which was good enough for the runner-up honors, Two races later in the program, they were at it again, this time in the Superminis. Baker tucked in behind Wilson immediately but again found himself falling back to sixth place, this time on the first lap. He did, however, rebound qUickly, regaining second place after two laps, but he couldn't track the leader down. However, his runner-up finish was as good as a win, as he got the jump in the second mota, then lost the lead F 58 NOVEMBER 2,2005 • CYCLE NEWS briefly in turn three but then retrieved it several turns later. So when they met a third time in the 80cc age-group races, they were still going head to head, though scored in separate classes. Three more intense laps in moto one again saw the younger Wilson holding down the lead. only to overshoot a berm, and Baker, who was right on his tail, taking over the lead. With Baker winning both ends of the SOcc (14-16) class, Wilson's shot at a matching second overall ended abruptly in the second 80cc (12-13) moto with a first-lap spill that gave Honda rider Everett Holcomb the opening he needed for a 2-1 victory. Similar action occurred in the single 20-minute 125cc/250cc Pro moto, with lone 450F rider Cha Evans crashing in turn two on the first lap. shoving him back to last and an eventual DNF. AJ. Steinbach put his J. Jones/Shift/A-5tars Honda into the frontrunning void, but he got stuffed into a turn-three berm on lap two by Billy Swapp, who then motored his Thor/Dragon Honda into the lead and stayed there for the duration, while an irate Steinbach was unable to regain his ground.
