International Old-TImers Annual Race Series Round 12: Bunker Hill Raceway The Battle of Bunker Hill By GENE HIGGINBOTHAM DELTA, UT, SEPT. 24-25 The first-ever International Old-Timers I Series race held in Delta, Utah, was on a track described by some as "a great. oldRtimerfriendly track." It had some sand and some hardpack, and it was groomed beautifully. Brent Larsen, new president of the Rocky Mountain Chapter, and his members hosted a great event. Even skyrocketing gas prices didn't prevent the old-timers from shoWing up to check out this new track, and they were rewarded with a top-shelf meal and a raffle with great prizes, and the winners of each class took home an E2 exhaust pipe, courtesy of White Brothers. The efforts of Larsen and his crew of volunteers were much appreciated. The last race in the series always brings out the riders who have not yet clinched their class championship. One such championship that was still undecided was the Over SO Experts class, hotly contested by Ron Hudson and Harvey Mushman. jerome Gibson, who came all the way from Los Angeles, let Hudson and Mushman know that he was the guy to beat in the first moto, and went on to take the next four motos and the overall. Oregon's Hudson settled for second, but the good news (for him) was that that was enough to win the series championship. Sierra's Mushman placed fourth this weekend but took second overall for the series. Hudson and Mushman made it an exciting finish! The Over 50 Amateur division was probably the closest of all, with L.A.', Kent Reed, Idaho's Gordon Skinner and Washington's Kyle Montgomery coming to Utah separated by very few points (Reed with 143, Skinner with 138 and Montgomery with 128), which made this contest critical to their championship aspirations. Reed had worked hard all season; this race was the 10th he had attended of the series' 12 events. While Reed came prepared, there had to be some concern on his mind: Skinner would only have to place ahead of Reed in the overall for the weekend to take the points lead and the championship away from Reed. Montgomery was lurking in the background in case they took each other out, which would give him the championship. Reed powered into the lead in the first moto, taking the first of five holeshots on his Pro Circuit/O'Neal-backed 2006 CRF4S0 Honda. Reed ended the moto in third, behind local Rocky Mountain riders Jack Baughman and Pete Gilstrap, with Skinner fourth and Montgomery fifth. Baughman was so convincing in his win that he was "bumped" immediately into the Over SO Experts for his next moto. It was the Reed-and-Montgomery show during the rest of the motos; Skinner, AMA District Z7 Summer Motocross Series Round 6: Washougal Motocross Park Sannan, Warren, Meusling - Magnificent! By CLAY LIGHT WASHOUGAL, WA, SEPT. 25 TM-mounteq Oregonian Pete Sannan and Washington Honda jockey Miles Warren walloped the competition in the Pro classes at the sixth and final round of the AMA District 27 Summer Motocross Series, held at Washougal Motocross Park in southwestern Washington. Sannan, a first-year Pro, won both 12Scc Proclass motos to join dual 250cc Pro moto winner Warren in the winners' circle. While Sannan and Warren were impressive, Oregon's Erik Meusling was phenomenal en route to a pair of overall Intermediate-class wins. Meusling, riding a brand·new 2006 Honda CRF2S0R, was in a class by himself: He dominated the 125cc and 250cc classes to stand in a small circle of double-class winners on the day, which included 8Scc (9-1 I) and Superminiclass winner Brad Frace. Warren and Sannan went head to head in two classes. Sannan led much of the opening 12Scc Pro moto, but Warren got by the 18year-old late in the moto to take the lead briefly. Sannan, though, got around Warren with one lap remaining to card a win. Warren led moto two, but Sannan and Daniel Reude both K S4 swept past Warren early on in the moto and finished one-two, ahead of Warren, in the motos and overall as well. Both Sannan and Warren stayed in close quarters in the 250cc Pro class, but this time the war went Warren's way in both motos. Sannan dropped Warren to second place briefly in moto two, but Warren executed a perfect block-pass to take the lead and maintained the position to the finish. Sannan, Sean Sparkman, Joe Brockway and Jeff Edson filled out the top fIVe. Overall, it was Warren (I-I), Sannan (2-2), Brockway (3-4), Edson (4-5) and Sparkman (7-3). Meusling and the rest of the 250cc B contestants ran combined with the Pro riders and, once again, the Honda rider turned some heads with his performances. While Meusling easily won both contests, his second·moto performance had to be his best. Starting in the second wave of riders some 16 seconds behind the Pro field, Meusling carved through the Pro pack to trail only Warren and Sannan at the finish. "We're pretty excited to be on the Hondas for next season," said john Meusling, Erik's father. "Suzuki was giving us some pretty decent support, but we decided to go with what we felt the best available motorcycle was and pay our own expenses." NOVEMBER 2,2005 • CYCLE NEWS PHOTO BY GENE HIGGINBOTHAM uncharacteristically, had nothing for either of them. Reed won two more, as did Montgomery, but the overall went to Reed, with Montgomery second. After a very long, hard-fought season, the Over SO Amateur championship went to Reed, with Skinner holding on to second. Montgomery's hard charge took him to within six points of Skinner for third. What a great series this has been. See you in Arizona in 2oo6! Washington's Chris Porter was also a doubleclass winner. The Honda rider thumped to overall Before The Hill and 125cc C-class wins, both via I-I sweeps. Like Meusling, Porter's wins came by fairly substantial margins. Oregon's jeremiah Sparks overcame a poor start in the second Before The Hill mota to finish closer to Porter than any other competitor and used 3-2 finishes to trail Porter, but ahead of Ricky Miranda (4-3) in the 24-rider field.
