Pennsy~nia State Championship Series. Mapleshade MX now joins the ranks of Challenger, Steel City, Pleasure Valley, Field of Dreams, High Point and Roaring Knob as a track that has hosted one or more of the eight rounds of this series. A big rider turnout is expected, as riders from all over District 5 make their way in for the big race. One thing's for sure: The staff at Mapleshade will be ready for them. Lewistown Grand Prix Lewistown Motocross Track It's Maxwell's Housel By STEVEN HANDL LEWISTOWN, MT, OCT. 9 T he first-ever Lewistown Grand Prix got off to a soggy start. Sponsored by Lewistown Honda, the race would be run regardless of weather conditions. in true Grand Prix tradi- tion. The racecourse stretched through four miles of rolling hills, ravines, and flat prairie land. The weather had changed the plains of central Montana to something like the fogshrouded, rain-drenched Scottish Highlands scene from the film Braveheart. Momentum would prove to be a rider's best friend: If you went too slow, your tires would grow in size until the wheels would stop turning! Riders could be seen cleaning mud and grass from their steaming bikes' wheels, while other riders mastered the conditions, making for really dose racing in the early morning races. Wind and bright sunshine at noon changed the racecourse from slime to prime-time tacky loam, and the racing action became intense. Ironman riders with their adobe-dad bikes (Le., mud and grass baked on from engine heat) were easy to spot in the pits as they worked to free shift and brake levers from the early-morning race mud. The Ironman riders had fIVe races in which to do battle, and with the changing track conditions, their riding skills would be tested. Early Ironman points leader Tom Stark crashed hard in the second race but was able to remount and take the win. "I hit a bump on a uphill section," Stark recounted, "and I rode my front wheel for a long time until my bike threw me off. My arm hurts and looks like Popeye the Sailor's, so I am done."
