Hancock Does It Again reg Hancock withstood a tough challenge from Billy Hamill to capture his sixth AMA National Speedway Championship at Fast Fridays Speedway in Auburn, California, on October I. Hancock, 3S, came into the event as the favorite to win a third cons&utrve AMA title, but Hamill claimed the pole poSition for the A final by sweeping all five of his qualifying heats, including a crucial win over Hancock in heat 17. Hancock could have clinched the championship with a victory in that heat, but instead the title went down to the wire in the pivotal A main event. Hamill elected to start the four-lap final from the inside pole, and Hancock chose the outside gate and made it work to perfection, launching into a quick lead and then holding off a spirited bid for the lead from Hamill on lap three to earn the win. Veteran racer Charlie Venegas, 3B, placed third in the A final and was also third in the championship, while 22-yearold Ryan Fisher was fourth in the A final as G Local favorite Bart Bast won the B main event and vaulted from eighth to fifth in the AHA National Championship Speedway Series points race to clinch an automatic berth in the 2006 series. Former AMA National Speedway Champion Mike Faria ended the season ranked sixth, and Nate Perkins was the year's top rookie performer, in seventh. If Hancock should repeat as champion in 2006, he will tie Mike Bast for first place on the all-time National Speedway Championship honor roll, with seven titles.
