Michelin/WERA National Challenge Series Round 9: Nelson ledges Roadcourse Warrin' in Warren! BY DAN SCHMITT WARREN, OH, SEPT. 11 The weather was perfect in eastern Ohio I (or the ninth round of this I I~race series. Mark Junge blasted off the line to lead the freight train of riders for the first three laps. Then the red flag flew after Rueben Frankenfield and Ben Thompson came together coming out of turn 13 and ended up in the grass. After a short delay, Junge again led the first lap, but Frank Trombino made the charge into the lead, with David Weber third. On the fifth lap, Weber crashed out, and Shawn Conrad and Larry Denning contested third in this tight-knit foursome. Trombino stayed on the gas and went on to victory but was disqualified during the postrace tech check. Charlie Coleman took the Open Novice Superstock win. with a hard-charging Scott Sheehan hot on his heels. Dan Sheehan took a runaway victory in the 600cc Novice Superstock final, with J.B. Layman second. Coleman again led the 750cc Novice Superstock final, as Dan Sheehan charged through the pack to battle with Tony Palarie for second. At the line, he was a little short. Coleman again won 7S0cc Superbike, and Palarie held off Blake jones to retain second. Josh Herrin charged off the line in 600cc Superstock and led until halfway, when Conrad took the lead. Herrin came right back on the next lap to recapture the lead. Right behind this twosome, Taylor Knapp tried to find a way around Junge but came up short at the line. Tray Batey stretched his lead over joe Ball for the Heavyweight Twins Expert Superstock win. Scott Sheehan did likewise in the Novice race, beating jason Lawyer. In the combined "small Twins" race, Expert jimmy Wood and Novice Matt LaPham battled for the lead, with the Expert taking the overall win. Peter Cline took his Supermotard KTM to the Expert Formula Two victory, and laPham won the Novice race on his Suzuki SV650. It was a knock-down, drag-out battle in the 7S0cc Expert Superstock final, as Joe Gill hounded Batey for three laps and then pounced to snatch the lead. Batey came back to squeeze by in tum II, but Gill reclaimed it on the next lap. Two thousand feet from the end, Batey again squeezed by Gill in turn I I and held on for the win, beating Gill by .194 of a second. Herrin spanked them in the 600cc Expert New England Regional Championship Winchester Speedpark Motocross WINCHESTER, NH, SEPT. 3·5 I f you race motocross in New England, chances are pretty good that you can pick an organization to race with every weekend, spring through fall. If you're way up north, you can run with the Maine MX Series or the New Hampshire Challenge. Of course, you may prefer the Winchester Speed park Series. Then again, you may want to run with NEMA. The granddaddy of them all, with the "fastest riders in New England," is, of course, the NESC, breeding ground for guys like Dowd and Henry, plus a whole host of fast local riders. So who are the fastest racers in New England? Enter the New England Regional Championship: three days. three motos to determine the fastest in each class. And on September 3, 4 and 5, virtually every racer in New England came to Winchester Speedpark to find out. The first gate drop for the weekend was for the 125cc Expert class, and it was to be an indicator of how the racing would go for the entire weekend. The lead changed three times in the first two laps, and the battles ran deep throughout the class. The holeshot for moto one went to Josh jones. but Chad Charbonneau quickly took over the lead on his way to the mota win. Charbonneau ran his Cernics.com/Factory Connection Honda around like it was on rails, going 1-1-1 for a solid win in the I25cc Expert class.
