Barona Oaks Mini NatIonals Barona Oaks RacEWi!lY IAIlONA OAKS RActwAy - - . . , CAuFORNIA Thorstensen Thunders to Mini Nationals Wins By HOMER EUBANKS RAMONA, CA, SEPT. 3-4 The 18th annual Barona Oaks Mini NationI als, hosted by CMMC and presented in part by KTM, Motoworld, Motorsport Products, Motowond Racing.com, Quinsey Powersports, Maxima, Ready Racing, Kenda, Team ECC, Alba, EscondidoCycieCenter.com, liquid Performance, Motorex, O'Neal, One Industries. Motocross Resource Guide and Soup Graphix, drew 544 challengers competing for more than $40,000 in prizes. The notfor-profit CMMC organization provided prizes for all the contestants, with double-class winners Phil Thorstensen, Austin Politelli, Chris Plouffe, joey 5avatgy and Zay Solis taking home the lion's share of the grand prizes. The Pro classes ended up being a contest attrition. Michael La Paglia won the first 12Scc or Pro event but didn't start moto two. Tim Beatty earned the overall I 2Scc Pro money after placing second in moto one and then holding off Dustin Nelson on the last lap of mototwo. La Paglia seemed to have the 12Scc Expert class covered until he encountered a slower rider during a landing in front of the tower. Josh Tarantino took the overall Expert win with his 1-3 results. Everything really fell apart in the 2SOcc Pro event. Beatty crashed in the whoops while leading on the start. Jarred Browne took over, but Nelson set him up for an inside block- pass. Neither Browne nor Nelson backed off when they came together, and their momentum pushed both riders off the tower jump. Both attempted to ride back onto the track, but both fell against the fence. Browne tallied a DNF, and Nelson returned to the action. jen Loop was in the lead. Chris Wheeler (who had earlier won the 2S0cc Expert class) scored a DNF after taking a spill midrace. Of the eight starters, four didn't 'finish, giving Loop an easy win. Nelson finished third, behind justin Herrman. Phil ~ had very little trouble taking the 12Scc (16-2S) class win but found it rough going in moto one or the 125cc Intermediate class. Thorstensen crossed over second Intermediate, behind Bruce Rutherford, but he went on to win the following moto, with Rutherford crossing chry (ICTM); 3. Kyle Sullenbarler (Cob); Sue (KTM); 2. PHOTO BY PETER SMAKULAlMDTORSPORTS PHOTOS By DAN SCHMITT WARREN, OH, SEPT, 10 n order to bring another challenge to the teams of this National Championship series, WERA returned to its roots and decided to bring back some night racing, This six-hour race was scheduled to start at 4 p.m. and run until 10 p.m. Twenty-seven teams made the trek to eastern Ohio and were greeted by absolutely prefect weather. Mark Crozier led the charge on the Team Velocity R I. followed by Tray Batey on the Vesrah Suzuki. Bell's Arnchu Racing, Red Star. Team Xtreme/Maxxis, P.B. Pipeline, Velocity Crew Racing, 5150 Racing, Army Of Darkness and Dalke Motorsports followed. On the third lap, Batey moved to the lead, and Arnchu moved up to challenge Velocity Racing. As Velocity charged into the pits at the 50minute mark for their first of many stops for fuel, Need A Sponsor was in the pits to reattach their header pipe, which lost them 14 precious laps. 5 ISO Racing was also in the pits with a poorly running engine, traced to a misfiring Power I Commander. Vesrah gained a lap on the field, and by the second-hour mark, this advantage grew to two laps. Arnchu, Red Star and Team Xtreme continued to battle for third overall. Two hours and 4S minutes into the race, with the shadows growing long on the track, Chris Pyles crashed out in turn three, missing the television cameraman by 10 feet. With an ambulance on the scene, Ghetto Customs ran off the track 100 feet down the line, and this brought out the red flag. Vesrah charged to the lead again, with Team Velocity second. Again, Team Velocity, running a required stock fuel tank, needed fuel, so they ducked into the pits. Arnchu moved to second, with Red Star, Team Xtreme/Maxxis, Army Of Darkness, Dalke Motorsports, Wikle Racing and 5150 Racing hot on their heels. As the shadows turned into darkness in the back carrousel section of the track, the headlights came on. Vesrah continued to lead, with Arnchu second. With the Prince of Darkness, Sam Fleming, on the bike, Army began its assault on Red Star's two-lap lead.
