AMA District ~ Grand Prix Round 5: RacEtown 395 PHOTO BY EVENT PHOTO Maiden Voyage a Success for Vikings Me GP By DAVE OAKLEAF ADELANTO, CA, SEPT. 17-18 ore than 600 riders and 900 race entries M proclaimed the inaugural Vikings Motor- cycle Club Grand Prix a resounding success. This race was a charity event, benefiting the Inland Empire Autism Society. It was also a test run to see jf this event qualified to be included in the very successful District 37 Big 6 Grand Prix Series in 2006. Ty Davis continued his winning ways by topping the second Unclassified race on Saturday and then following that up with a win in the Semi-Pro Team money race with partner Nathan Woods at the first-ever Vikings GP at Racetown 39S in Adelanto, Califomia. Davis & Woods took top honors in the Semi-Pro Team race, besting some of the top riders in the country by a good margin after taking a comfortable lead on the first lap and stretching it out for the rest of the hour-and-a-half race, Mark Tilley & Dal)ll Ecklund diced with Scott Myers & Spud Walters and beat them to the checkers for the second-place money. Davis remarked after the race that the Vikings and park owners did a great job of grooming and watering the course, and that he was glad to see that there were sufficient course marshals in the 7-mile desert section to prevent course cutting, which has been a problem in the past with races at Adelanto. There was a mile-long straight section that tested bikes' resistance to seizing, and this section took its toll. Tilley had a good day of racing on Saturday as well, starting with a fourth-place finish in the second Unclassified race, He then won the Open Expert Four-Stroke race, beating out talented riders Woods and Jeff Eide. Then he capped off his day with a second-place finish in the Team money race. To make his weekend racing complete, he returned on Sunday to win the Open Expert race, over Eide. Nicholas Burson, and Baja 500 winner Mike Childress. Paul Krause, a dedicated District 37 racer, also had a full weekend of racing, including a pair of fives: a fifth in the first Unclassified race and a fifth in the Team race. He broke out of this rut in between these races in the Open Expert Senior contest by taking first place on his KTM. Krause was surprised to learn that he had won, since there was a big pileup shortly after the start and he and a number of other riders went down, including the second-place finisher, Fred Hatch. Krause said he spent the rest of the race chasing what he thought were the leaders somewhere ahead of him, only to find out after the race that there was no one ahead of him; he was actually the leader the whole time! Krause returned on Sunday to race with the younger Vets and took fourth in the Open Vet Expert class. The partnership of the Vikings and the owners of Racetown 395 produced a quality event, which very likely will be included in the District 37 Big 6 Series - perhaps soon to become the Magnificent 7 in 2006...1 beETOWN CN 395 ADElANTO, CAUfORNIA R£5WS: 5EPnMBER 17-18, 20051ROUND 5) SEMI-PRO TEAM RACE: I. Rodger Flaming followed her to the checkers to take third in the moto. The overall win went to Brown (1-2), second overall went to Black, and Pochirowski rounded out the podium finishers. The 28-35 Pro class thundered off the gate and away to the large step-up jump at the back of the track. As the riders came back around, Willy Musgrave was leading Todd Mitchell, Chris Heinrich and David McCown. On the second lap, McCown passed Heinrich for third. While Musgrave pulled away, McCown tried to catch Mitchell, and though he gained some time, he was unable to make a challenge for second. Musgrave cruised in for the moto win, followed by Mitchell and McCown. Musgrave again jumped into the lead in moto two, with a charging Mitchell behind him. On the second lap, Mitchell passed Musgrave. For the next four laps. Musgrave put strong pressure on Mitchell. With the two-lap signal being given, Musgrave reclaimed the lead and held on for the win, closely followed by Mitchell. Suzuki jockey Steve Nelson battled his way from sixth up to third. Musgrave and Mitchell took the two top overall positions, while Todd Flaming claimed third overall with consistent 4-4 finishes.
