Continued from poge 19 craziest week of my life," he said. "When we got back from France [from the MX des Nations], I was supposed to go str.light to California and test for a week, and t had my surgery scheduled the week before the U.S. Open, which would Ila\'e definitely made me a no-show. Testing, however, got pushed back a week [and so did the surgery]. I rode Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and ThlKSday, testing. As of Thursday morning, I wasn't sure I was going to make it because... I committed to Clear Channel and everything, but I couldn't find a flight home, and I have to have my surgery Monday morning, so it was getting to be a really iffy deal. I went to the test track Thursday morning, and Alley [Semar, Windham's mechanic] came back that day and found the tickets on Orbitz, and here we are." Kiniry had the better finish in the second moto, he was awarded third overall. Hansen had 37 points for second overall. Weimer, however, had the ride of his life, finishing a strong third in the race. Unfortunately for him, a seventh on Friday night relegated him to fifth overall. But the man of the hour was the Aussie, Metcalfe. "It's crazy - I haven't won a race here in America in three years, which has been my goal," Metcalfe said. "I've had a lot of ups and downs, a few injuries here and there, and I've bounced back as hard as I could and I never gave up. It feels unbelievable for me to win a race. I'm on an emotional high right now. It's awesome! "I started in third," Metcalfe continued, regarding Saturday night's race. "L.aninovich was leading, I think, and he made a little mistake, and Andrew and him kind of came together, and that kind of played into my hands, and I got into second. I knew all I had to do was beat Billy and Hansen, and I didn't even know where they were. I was just focused on second, and I kind of wanted to hang with Andrew for a little bit, but he was going quick, and I thought, :A.h, just back it down and finish second and get the overall.' I was nervous. It felt like a 40-hour race." eN 10. TedCan¢el(Hen). SUPERCROSS HEAT 1, I. Ricky Cam1khael (Suz); 2. Mkhael 8yrne (Kaw); J. Mike L&cco (Hen); 4. When you take the summer off and you don't ride with anybody, it's a lot different when you come here. I fek okay, just a little clumsy. I would've loved to have been racing with Ricky, but I still have some work to do." l.aRocco also finished fourth on Saturday night, but he had a little luck when Fonseca crashed out and he was able to move up a spot.. Ricky Cannichael talked a little about the future of his career and how much longer he might race. "I don't know how long I'm going to race." he said. "I don't know if I'm going to race in '07 full time; I haven't made my mind up. You know, we race a lot now, but I want to do stuff for the sport and put my two cents in and help make it grow. I think I'm going to race iii. long time, but at this level and full seasons? I can't guarantee that. I know for sure I won't race full time after 200]. but I want to stay in the sport. I love being in the stadiums. working with Clear Channel and being out here, but if something happens and I can never race again, I'm happy with whatI've accomplished, and if you're happy and have piece of mind, then just race 'til you feel like racing. so right now I'll do a lot of thinking in the next three weeks and see what happens. I've got some good opportunities in other places. but I want to be around. I've done this since I was 5 years old and. like a lot of us, we've been around this for a long time, and it's the only thing we know." Supercross Utes-class winner Brett Metcalfe said that he was quite happy with the new 2006 aluminum-frame Yamaha VZ250F. "We got the '06 three weeks ago and have pretty much been riding it every day," he said. "We tested and came up with a good setup. The bike came straight out of the crate pretty damn good, so we were pumped. We came here with a good bike and setup," Some of the loudest cheers of the weekend came in the KTM Junior Supercross Challenge races, where all of the winners of the 2005 AMA Supercross rounds were inv;ted to compete at the U.S. Open, and a lot of the cheering had to do with a few of the riders clearing some of the track's big double jumps. One of those riders was Donny Brown (center), who ended up taking home the number-one trophy. Brown's 3-1 results over the weekend netted him the Victory over Drarian Sanayei, who went 1-4. Finishing on the podium in third was Drake Dunlap. There was a lot of good racing and excitement in the 85cc Mini class. Of the four motos, no one won more than one, and the overall winner, Blake Wharton (3), didn't even win a moto, but Wharton's consistency was the key to his success. Wharton went 2-2-2-4 over the weekend to take the overall win. Second went to opening-moto winner Eli Tomac, while third went to Shawn Rife Jr., the winner of Friday night's second moto. 'JYler Sjoberg and Justin Barcia won Saturday night's main events but finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the overall results.
