DUQUOIN STAn FAIRGROUNDS
DUQUOIN, IWHOIS
RESULTS: OCTOBER 1, 2005
(ROUND 15 Of 15)
the title was still up for grabs, as defending champion Harv's Harley-Davidson
Racing's Chris Hart held a one-point lead
over Lima Harley-Davidson/jeff
EiblinglWidman Motorcycle Sales' Scott
Stump.
Doc's Harley-Davidson/jim
Wagner-backed Merle Scherb was another 10 points back.
At the start of the 12-lap main,
Stump got a huge holeshot on the field.
Brian Phillips pulled his Mom &
Dad/Scott Stump/Pringel-backed
Sportster out of the pack and closed on
Stump. Merle Scherb held third, over
F&S
Harley-Davidson/KK
Supplybacked riders A.j. Eslick and Ricky
Marshall,
Mike
Meyer
38N/jim
Wagner's Kyle Whitis, and Hart.
The only way for Hart to defend his
title was to pass Stump, and that's just
what he did, and he led the white-flag lap.
However, Stump was not to be denied.
He regained the lead on the last lap and
took the win, capturing his second
Sportster Series Championship.
Hart held on for second, while
Marshall nipped Phillips in a photo finish
for third. low Country HarleyDavidson/Stokes Automotive Group's
William Seyle grabbed fifth, over Eslick
and Whitis. KK Supply/Vanson leathers'
jaron Smith, Doc's Harley-DaVidson/Jim
Wagner's Brian Kromroy, and Merle
Scherb rounded out the top 10.
SOSCC EXPERT SUPPORT
Some 43 Experts attempted to qualify for
the 18-rider main. The little single-cylinder engines proved to be highly competitive but also very fragile. Attrition was
high, with some of the engines coming
apart in big pieces.
Fast qualifier Bryan Smith had his
Moroney's Harley-Davidson & Honda!
Content Control-backed Honda in front,
with
latus
Harley-Davidson/jones
Powersports Rotax rider joe Kopp,
Woody Kyle Racing/Ron Wood Racing/
Kersting's Cycle's Yamaha rider Kevin
Atherton, Weirbach Racing/Saddlemen's
Rotax rider jared Mees, and Motorcyclist
Post/Kirby Kyles' Honda rider logan
Myers comprising the early leaders.
Atherton, Kopp and Smith opened a
little gap, while Mees and Meyer lost
touch. Meyer, who was making his first
start after being injured in April, made
one last run toward the front before settling into fourth.
A photo finish saw the win going to
Smith. over Atherton and Kopp. Memphis
Shades/Parts Unlimited's j.R. Schnabel got
by Mees for sixth. Ideal Environment/
Marshall Distributing's Bryan Bigelow,
Modesto Harley-DaVidson/Briggs Auto's
Kent Briggs, TNT Harley.com/DDT
Racing's Clayton Riggle and KK
Supply/Mack Daddy Racing's Henry Wiles
rounded out the top 10.

Motorcyclist Post's Logan Myers rode in
the 505cc Expert Support class, finishing
a strong fourth.
The Magie Mile was one of the few racetracks on which Chris Carr had not won
a National. "It was a fun race," Carr said.
"Everybody is so aggressive, you don't
have to worry about falling in line. You
don't necessarily have to sneak right back
in like at Springfield. At Springfield, the
line seems to be a little narrower. Here,
it's a free-for-all through the corners. You
can go in just about anywhere and come
out just about anywhere. There is opportunity; if you're doing good on one line,
you might be able to make some passes
in a corner for position. Then there are
times when you can't. It depends on
where another bike is. Some guy's bike
works good high, another one works
good in the middle, and another one
works good low through the corners,
and you see a lot more side-by-side racing. I think I won here as ajunior in 1984.
I don't really remember back that far. It's
certainly the first 750 win for me here.
We've been close; I've had some close
seconds. In 1986, Bubba [Shobert] beat
me to the line, he and I were going at it
one on one. One year I led the first five
laps, and the rains came down and I was
kind of getting away from them that
time. We've just been off on our setup
recently. We came here with a bit of a
different setup, chassiswise. It seemed to
get through the corners a lot better."
Kevin Atherton once again suffered
through a hard night. Already hurt from
a practice crash earlier in the week, he
was slammed again in the National_ 'The
shock broke," Atherton said. "I fell off a
motocross bike on Wednesday. It got all
my ribs and knocked me out." Despite
all this, Atherton was upbeat after the
races_ "I'm okay," he said. "I hurt my
hand. It's the other hand, the one I hurt
at Syracuse. A visit to the doctor and I'll
be all right."
The Lloyd Racing Team keeps putting
its Aprilla in the mile Nationals. Dan
Stanley became the third rider to do it
this year; the other two were larry
Pegram and Scott Stump. "Danny was
happy, but we weren't," said team owner
David lloyd. "We had problems with the
motors. On the new bike we built, all the
essentials went bad on it. Henry [Wiles]
rode the bike at Norwalk and put the
chain through the cases. All we had was
an old street-bike motor. It wasn't making much horsepower_ Dan went around
some guys in the corners_ He didn't give
up, either, but we struggled. On the bike
with the street-bike motor. he started
feeling the clutch go in the heat race, so
we had to put a clutch in it. Then we had
the gas tank spring a small leak. We had
to epoxy that all up before the main. It's
been a long day. We finished 12th here
last year. I know we can run this good on
the half-miles too. but we can't afford it."
