MOTOGP Round 14 October 1. 2005 ~ World Championship Road Racing Series Briefly.•. Conrinued from page 23 of a hundred hairdryers on full heat," he said. Several riders again used the Camelbak drinking system, fitted to their leathers. Over at Kawasaki, they fitted a small heat shield on the right-side footpeg of Shinya Nakano's bike, protecting his foot from the blast of super-heated air that had been troubling him. Kawasaki will have an all-new motor for the last year of the 990cc class, and while plans for an end-of-season debut have been shelved, the team expects the bike for testing directly after the final GP of the season at Valencia. According to sources close to the team, the project was started before the decision to drop to 800ce for 2007, but Kawasaki decided to proceed anyway, even for just one season of racing life. HRC has denied rumors that it has had to cut the rev ceiling of the RC211V V-five motor to restore reliability, after engine Casey Stoner (27) dominated the 2S0cc Grand Prix, winning for a second time in a row to keep his slim championship hopes alive. past, with half a lap to go and no more challengers. There had been some hard action in the midfield as well. Rolfo had a blazing start on the d'Antin Ducati, and he held seventh until the third lap, when both Carlos Checa and his shadow, Nakano, zipped by. They stayed engaged for most of the race, Nakano dropping away in the latter stages only to catch up again at the finish, though not close enough to pose a threat. Rolfo had continued to lose places, with Biaggi ahead of him on lap four. The factory Honda rider's race was not to last, however: One lap later, he slowed and pulled into the pits, with a bad connection blamed for upsetting his electronics. Elias had been with him, and he moved ahead of Rolfo as both Barros and Roberts engaged with the satellite Ducati rider. In the melee, Barros got ahead, and by halfdistance he had caught Elias. Then he went ahead for two laps, but his frontgrip problems were dire, and the rookie Elias got in front again on lap 14 - and pulled away to the finish. Capirossi was next, making places again, and passing Roberts with nine laps to go. The American was finding the going hard on his underpowered Suzuki, and he was three seconds behind by the finish, though comfortably clear of Rolfo. Roberts' teammate Hopkins had a bad race, battling with tires from the start. "I just couldn't get them to work," he said later. Hopkins eventually ran off into the gravel, and thereafter pitted for a change. Makoto Tamada had another disappointing race, struggling to pass Rolfo for 24 12th and then crashing out with five laps to go, blaming a mechanical malfunction that his team was still investigating. Rossi added yet another 25 points to his total - at 306, still 51 short of his record set in 2003. There is a gaggle battling for second: Biaggi on 159, Melandri with 157, Edwards with 152, Hayden eN with 150 and Capirossi with 148. lOSAIL CIRCUIT DOHA, QATAR RESULTS: OCTOBER 2, 2005 MOTOGP QUALIFYING: I. UPCOMING ROUNDS: Phillip Island, Australio, Octaber 16 ISlanbul, Turkey, Octaber 23 problems afflicted both Tohru Ukawa and Alex Barros at Motegi. Reports were that the maximum revs had been dropped from 16,500 to 16,000 rpm from the Malaysian GP onward, but a spokesman said there was no truth in this: "It may have arisen because somebody heard a slightly different exhaust note, but we are experimenting with torque curves all the time, so this is normal," The new-generation V-five Honda motor, fleetingly tested at Brno after the race, may be seen in full race action before the end of the year. It depends on when the test program with Tohru Ukawa is completed, but the hope is to have the motor in action, possibly at the last round in Valencia, according to a Honda source. The new motor is shorter than the current motor, with the gearbox input shaft moved downward by as much as 20mm so that the output shaft can be moved forward, making the entire motor shorter so that the swingarm pivot can also be moved forward. There will likely be four Ducatis again next season - and the second pair, run again by Team d'Antin, will be closer to full factory spec. For the past two seasons, the Spanish ex-GP racer has run year-old Desmosedicis, two in 2004 and just one this year, ridden by Roberto Rolfo. Next year, he expects to return to full strength, possibly on Bridgestone tires, with Briton lames Ellison in the frame as a possible second rider. The machines will not be last year's model, as before, but to the same basic spec as the factory machines, though down the pecking order when it comes to new parts and modifications. Valentino Rossi moved up to equal fourtime World Champion Eddie lawson at Qatar, with his 78th premier-class podium. Only Mick Doohan and Giacomo Agostini are ahead of him, with 95 and 88, respectively. Wayne Rainey has 64, and Max Biagg; has 58. Gabor Talmacsi's I 25-c1ass win preserved an astonishing record in the class. There have now been 52 races without a back-toback winner.
