USGPRU West Coast Series Round 5: California Speedway GruyWins to Claim West Coast Championship By CARRIE DAWN FONTANA, CA, SEPT. 2S T exan Will Gruy qualified first and finished first in the 125cc GP class at the USGPRU West Coast final at California Speedway. With 24 of the fastest of the fast present. along with East Coast riders trying to claim points (or the overall National Championship. the grid was hot. When the green nag dropped on this 14-lap AMA event. Gruy pulled out the holeshot to the first turn, with a hungry pack right behind him. The technical infield section became a battleground for a six-way skirmish for second place among Garrett Carter. Tyler Reiswig. Ben Solis. Erik Dadei. Ryan Ferris and Tommy Aquino. By the second lap, Gruy had a three-second lead, while the passing continued among Dadej, Ferris and Solis. The third lap brought out the red nag due to a high-side by the charging Ferris into one of the tightest turns on the track. At the eight·lap restart, Gruy once again took control and the lead. with Reiswig. Dadej. Solis and Aquino snapping at his heels. On lap three (of the restart). young gun Aquino was charging too hard, and he ran off the racing line, allowing Carter, who had gotten a slow restart, to take advantage of the situation and claim third from Solis. At the halfway point. Gruy was setting faster times than in qualifying. With Reiswig and Carter in a comfortable second and third, the battle of the race was among Solis, Dadej, Aquino and Rolando Quintero. With the white flag out, Aquino and Solis broke hard into tum three; Solis ran off the track. leaving fourth open for Aquino. who held off the fast Dadej and Quintero to the line. Gruy crossed the checkered flag to not onty win the race but secure his West Coast championship. Bradley Adams pulled out the hoieshot at the start of the 250cc contest and never looked back. Carter, a young gun from the East Coast, tried to hang with Adams but pulled in after only one lap due to a mechanical problem. Vincent Rolleri, Mark Watts. Billy DaJu and Reiswig pulled away from the rest of the pack and changed positions at every turn, making this race just as exciting as the 125cc contest was. At halfway, Watts was in command of second, and Rolleri and Dalu were fighting for third. Reiswig, in fourth. faded a bit but still held off the late-charging Stuart Aitken-Cade. With the high-speed banking. the field quickly spread out. revealing who had all the horsepower. That was clearly Adams. who had a 20-second lead at the checkered nag for the win.
