Road racer Geoff May has inked a contract with Team Hammer Inc. to race for Team M4 EMGO Suzuki in the AMA Superbike Series for the 2006 season. May, 25, raced in AMA Superstock and AMA Supersport in 2005 for Team M4 EMGO Suzuki, ending the season eighth in Superstock points. In Supersport, May ended the season fifth in points. "It's a great opportunity for myself and the team to showcase what we can do again next year," May said. "This season was a learning year for me and my first on a factory-supported team, so we were learning from scratch in some aspects. We had some good results but, of course, we would have liked to have done a little better at times. Still, I feel like we leamed a lot, and at the end of the year, the Pirelli tire development was really coming along. I'm looking forward to racing with the team again next year, and the mechanics are great. Suzuki's new GSXR600 looks like a really good bike, and we are anxious to see what it can do. We feel that we've made progress this year, and we are excited about 2006." The team plans for May to race in AMA Supersport and Superstock again next year. i!0 Year§" Ago... The Brett Downey Safety Foundation will hold is inaugural golf fund raiser on October 29 at the Menifee Lalkes Country Club in Menifee, California. All money raised will go directly to promoting track safety. The foundation has already started its pilot program with five tracks in Southern California, and more information will be available on that shortly. The foundation uses the money raised to provide tracks with starter kits, which include vests and flags for track flaggers, two-way radios for communication between some of the flaggers, and enter and exit signs for the tracks to post in the appropriate areas. Furthermore, the foundation has created a brochure with safety tips and track etiquette for riders of all levels, as well as for parents, to ensure their children know how to ride safely at a track and know what to expect from tracks. Finally, the foundation is in the process of creating a DVD to provide to the tracks and events to help train flaggers using the standards developed by the AHA for its road-racing program. This will help in unifying what the flaggers are taught and allow promoters to obtain flaggers from a pool of educated flaggers for their events. For more information on the foundation, visit www.mxsafety38.org. Road racer Keith Pinkstaff, 49, was killed on September 24 in a street-bike accident near Portland, Oregon.
