Round 12
MOTOCROSS
The AMA's Whitelock summed up the
whole incident: "The second moto, it's,
uh, a bit embarrassing for some riders really silly. 'Comical,' I think, is the word
that works pretty good. Watch that one
on television. One rider [Alessi] walks
over and stands on the other rider's front
wheel. I don't know if you know anything
about motorcycles, but that makes them
really hard to pick up! Then he [Alessi]
reaches out to pull his bike to him, while
he's standing on the other fella's
[Tedesco's] front wheel. Then the other
one [Walker] comes in and just says, 'Get
off his bike,' gives him a little push, and it's
all done. It's a bit embarrassing; probably
somebody's going to earn himself a
spanking."
Not to be overshadowed by this mess
was the excellent performance put in by
Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's
Ryan Villopoto. In just his third pro
National of his career, Villopoto was certainly on the gas, going )-2 for second
overall. Villopoto was among the lead
group with Langston, Alessi and Short for
much of the first moto, and he led the
first eight laps of the second moto before

getting passed by Langston.
"At Steel City last week, I rode real
tight," he said. "I pulled the holeshot here
in the second moto and didn't ride tight.
Once I saw Grant catch up to me, I didn't
want to push it or anything, so I just tried
to ride with him. He's a little bit faster for
right now,"
While the Kawasaki guys and Alessi
were getting all the attention throughout
the course of the day, Team Honda's Short
quietly went about his business and got on
the podium, in third, with 4-) moto
results, and he finished out the year third in
the standings, behind Tedesco and Alessi.
But the day belonged to the new champion, Tedesco.
"I kind of flew under the radar to start
the season," Tedesco said. "I didn't start out
really well - an eighth-place guy, maybe fifth.
I started getting better and better, got those
couple wins [Thunder Valley and
Washougal] and got a good points lead. I
wouldn't have put money on me going into
the season, with langston and a lot of other
guys that were fast, for sure. But it ended up
working out all right for me."
