SMX winner Kunzel (5) sails along in the
opposite direction of Chris Fillmore (11) during
the SMX main, with the beautiful city of
Toronoto serving as the backdrop.

over and over and over. It happened to Doug Beattie
first.
"I was fortunate to get the holeshot, that is half the
battle," Beattie said. "It is hard enough to pass in this
game. It worked for about three-quarters of a lap, and
then I found myself on the asphalt."
Beattie quickly got rolling again and found himself in
third, behind Aaron McDonald and Dan Rounding.
After a couple more laps, McDonald suffered the same
fate in the same corner and also moved himself back to
third. Rounding then led Doug Beattie and McDonald
for a few laps before he went down. Rounding
dropped to fourth place while attempting to restart his
bike. The last few laps were uneventful, as Beattie and
McDonald tiptoed to first and second, respectively.
Tim Riener finished third, ahead of Rounding.
Three of the leading teams in the AMA Supermoto
Championship were on hand to square off against
some of the fastest riders in Canada in the SMX class
at Toronto. When the main finally started, Jeff Ward
claimed the holeshot and led Jurgen Kunzel, David
Baffeleuf, Benny Carlson and Chris Fillmore around for
the first time. After a few laps of following Ward,
Kunzel found an inside line through one of the abrupt
infield turns and was able to dive inside him to take the
position.
Once in front, Kunzel built a bit of a cushion
between himself and Ward. There was a similar gap
between Ward and Baffeleuf, who was running in third.
Ward could pull close at will and threaten the leader,
but Kunzel owned the line and wasn't making any mistakes, and Ward could not seem to find a jump big
enough to pass him. With the podium order settled,
the front three gapped the field and ran off the last few
laps of the race. Carlson was able to hold off Fillmore
for fourth.
