FLATTRAKFOTOS.COM ord Quality Checked Certified Pre-owned Racing's Chris Carr enjoyed the sun on his face, the wind and 17 other competitors at his back, and more reign by clinching his fifth consecutive and seventh career AMA Grand National Championship at the Springfield Mile. HarleyDavidsonrrNT Harley.com's Shaun Russell was second, posting his best career finish at the Springfield Mile. Screamin' Eagle Harley-Davidson's Rich King was third, backing up his Memorial Day Weekend Springfield win with another podium finish. Although he only officially led two laps of the main event, the 38-year-old Carr was fast when he needed to be and smart enough to avoid trouble off the final corner as he rolled to his 71 st career AMA Grand National victory on a Iightningquick Springfield Mile racetrack that saw riders produce lap times in the high-33second and low-H-second bracket all day. The IMDA-prepared racetrack was F 38 partially responsible for the non-typical way in which this 2S-lap Springfield Mile developed. "Every race here is different," Carr said. "They all shape out a little different, and when you have a track as fast as it was SEPTEMBER 14,2005 • CYCLE NEWS today, it's going to be different than when we were running in the 3Ss here in the spring." King launched his factory HarleyDavidson XR7S0 to the head of the 18rider pack at the start of the main event, with Carr, Ford teammate Willie McCoy, Latus Motors Harley-Davidson/jones Powersports' joe Kopp, Bartels' Russell, and Mid-America Harley-Davidson/jones Powersports' Kenny Coolbeth all giving chase at the front of the draft.
