Mirko Giansanti SEPTEMBER 7,2005 • CYCLE NEWS The reassembly after the holidays saw some unexpected results, firstly from the track, which had developed more bumps and less grip than last year. Secondly, there was the widespread retum of chatter problems, troubling many riders, and thirdly from Bridgestone, who had clearly spent the break hard at work, coming back not only with vastly improved qualifying tires but also better race tires. These were amply demonstrated by a Loris Capirossi, who Valentino Rossi described as "reborn," heading two out of three free practices and setting strings of fast laps on race tires, too. "I am very happy with the combination of the machine and the new tires," the Ducati rider said. In the qualifying session, however, there were two Michelin-shod Hondas ahead of Capirossi on the front row, with Sete Gibemau winning a strong battle at the end of the session by half a tenth from Nicky Hayden. But he was aware how close the times were ~ I I riders within a second of pole - and that it was "going to be a tough race, as always here. It's very difficult to escape, and there are so many places to overtake. Every rider from first to 10th will count." Hayden was glowing after being unsure of how well he was doing after his on-board lap-timer failed. "We made a few small adjustments today, but it all helped, and it feels much more com~ fomble today," he said. Capirossi ended up third, snitching the last front-row slot from Rossi in the dying minutes. The points leader ended up fourth, less than four-tenths off pole after what had been, for him, a troubled two days of practice. "We have the problems solved, but maybe I was a little too conservative with my second qualifying tire," Capirossi said. "It was the softer one, and I didn't make the most of it." Marco Melandri was alongside after "a few mistakes on my final lap on qualifying tires," but he happy enough to be with the front group. Carlos Checa was next to him, coming through late after setup difficulties were solved only almost halfway into the final session. "The balance is much better now - that is why I am almost 1.5 seconds faster today than yesterday," Checa said. Row three was led by Alex Barros from john Hopkins, who was pushing hard on the Suzuki barely three weeks after surgery to his foot after his German GP adventu,es, and Colin Edwards on the second factory Yamaha. A bad two days saw track specialist Max Biag~ gi, seven times a Brno winner, qualifying 10th to lead the fourth row from Shinya Nakano and Makoto Tamada. "I'm very frustrated:' Biaggi said, blaming chatter among other problems. "I tried I00 per~ cent at a circuit I know so well, and have this result." Troy Bayliss led the next row from Alex Hofmann and Toni Elias. SU2Uki wildcard Nobu Aoki led the next from teammate Kenny Roberts, who ran only four laps in the session before retiring to Dr. Costa's clinic with "flu-like symptoms." Alongside was the ever-impressive james Ellison, top Dunlop runner on the WCM, ahead of Roberto Rolfo's Ducati and an off-form Ruben Xaus' Michelin-shod Yamaha, as well as teammate Franco Battaini. jeremy McWilliams, back to ride the revived V~five Proton, was the last qualifier.
