PHOTO BY CLAY LIGHT CMC Pac West Motocross Nationals Round S: Albany Motorsports Park Frace Puts on his Race Face! By CLAY LIGHT ALBANY, OR, JUNE 26 VTM-mounted Oregonian Brad Frace has been one of the I'dominant performers thus far in the CMC Pac West Nationals Series. It hasn't been uncommon to see Frace at the top of the results in two or three classes. For the second race in a row, Frace had his race face on, and he propelled himself to the top of the heap in the 65cc (9-11), 65cc Open and 85cc (7-11) classes, his latest wins coming at Albany Motorsports Park. The day's opening race was the combined Open Pro/8efore The Hill classes. Ty "Tiger" Lacey darted to the head of the combined field of 17 riders and was never headed in either moto. Lacey's wins came ahead of fellow Honda riders Nick McConahy (2-2) and Ryan Abrigo. Abrigo, the top performer throughout the entire series thus far, seemed content with his 3-3 placings. leading Anthony Cerruti (4-4) and J.R. Meusling (5-5). Idaho's Sam DeAtley has himself been a consistent performer, and this day was no exception. DeAtley beat Ryan Metzler in both motos to top the Before The Hill Intermediate class, and then he afso notched a win in the 125cc Intermediate class, finishing ahead of Danny Gubser and Jason Potter. However, Potter got the best of DeAtley in the 250cc Intermediate class, handing the rider from Lewiston his only loss on the day, although DeAtley still commands the points standings in the class. Kawasaki-mounted Washingtonians Tevin Tapia and Chris Howell were the top performers in the always-competitive Supermini class, although Yamaha-mounted California Gared Steinke did his best to put the stops to both riders. Tapia led Steinke and Howell to the checkered nag in the first moto, but Howell got the jump on the field in moto two and stayed there to card a win. Tapia, though, won overall with his 1-2 placings. Steinke was a no-show in moto two, and his 2-DNS tally plummeted him in the overall tally. Oregon's Chris Kolde (5-4) earned third overall, foHowed by Hunter Evanson (9-3) and Cooper Garza (7-5). Howell also got the best of the combined 85cc age-group classes. again after two tiring motos spent in battle with his nemesis, Tapia. The next-closest rider behind the lead duo was Frace, who was competing in the 85cc (7-1 I) class. Tapia won the first 85cc (12-13) moto, and Howell topped the second one to reverse the overall order from the earlier Supennini class. Frace also won the second 85cc (7-1 I) moto to net his first of three overall wins on the day. ahead of Mike Pontious and Evanson. Lacey and Abrigo clashed in the I25cc and 250cc Pro classes, and in the end it was a draw: Abrigo won the 125cc Pro class with his 2-1 placings, while Lacey topped the 250cc class to finish the day with two overall Pro-class wins. AMA National veteran Don Bisceglia was also a double-class winner in the Pro ranks, CN posting the Over 25 and Over 30-c1ass wins. With the AMA and Clear Channel both opting out of the legendary Del Mar Fairgrounds, something had to be done. And who would step up to the plate but Eddie Mulder? Yes, Mulder was going to try to put together a Del Mar race. But during negotiations with the fair board, it turned out the only night available was a Tuesday. Would the riders support a Tuesday night race? Mulder was willing to take that chance, so as to have at least one more Del Mar race. So on Tuesday night, June 28, in conjunction with the San Diego County Fair, some 169 participants made their way to the horse arena short track for round four of Eddie Mulder's West Coast Vintage Dirt Track Series. Forty-one Pros, many from out of state, showed up for the Digger Helm/California Cup Pro class, with Digger, Mulder and Motion Pro responsible for flying in Johnny Murphree and Shaun Russell. Out of the 41 present, only 14 would transfer to the main event via six heat races and two semis. Heat-race winners included Don Howard, Sam Halbert, Jimmy Wood, Jim Rosa, Jethro Halbert, and national number 20, Johnny Murphree, who all earned a front-row start. Transferring from the semis were David Brown and Joe Hernandez Jr. This Pro event was really three events in one, as it paid Digger Helm money, was part of the California Cup Series, and awarded points for the Maxxis Tires Pro Points Fund of $1000 at the end of the series. As the field roared into turn one for this 20-lap feature, Washington's Sam Halbert led the way, followed by Wood, Murphree, Howard, and Jethro Halbert. On the second trip down the back straight, Jethro displaced Howard for fourth. N 60 AUGUST 31,2005 • CYCLE NEWS WeRts Racing's Rosa ran sixth, with KLH's Stevie Bonsey in seventh. Four laps in, Bonsey passed Howard for sixth, while Wood was putting the pressure on Sam at the front. By lap six, Bonsey found a way past the TI500 of Rosa, and Wood was showing Sam a wheel in every corner. Howard continued to have problems, slipping backward as Danny Casey took over seventh. On lap eight. Wood got a drive out of tum four and took over at the front entering tum one. At hajfway, the order was Wood, Sam, Murphree, Jethro, Bonsey, Rosa and Casey. Then, on lap I I, Bonsey went wide entering tum three and lost it, hitting the dirt. This moved Rosa into fifth and Casey into sixth. Once clear, Wood began to check out, turning the fastest lap of the race at 12:84 seconds. Meanwhile, Murphree, in third, was under attack from Jethro, while Wood began to make his way through lappers. On lap 18, Hernandez went down without injury. The run to the stripe saw Wood victorious, Sam alone in second. Murphree holding on to third, Jethro fourth, and Rosa impressive in fifth. "The race track was awesome," Wood said afterward. 'Mer the sun went down, the moisture came back. These guys did such a good job in prepping it. My thanks to Eddie for doing this." "I struggled ail day till the main came around," Sam Halbert said, "and then everything started working right, but I just couldn't hang with Jimmy. I feel I did everything I could, but I just eN couldn't quite run with Jimmy." DEL MAR FAIRGROUNDS DEL MAR, CAUFORNIA RESULTS: JUNE 28, 2005 (ROUND 4) YTH so: I. Kylee Smith; 2. Joe Roberts.
