AMA 125cc National Motocross Presented by FMF off the factory racers one after another before moving up onto Langston on lap 12 of 14. But the veteran Langston, on the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki, would save his best for last, putting in his fastest lap time on the last lap of the first moto to hold off Hepler. Between motos, Suzuki team manager Roger DeCoster said: "Broc [Hepler] just needs to get better starts." Well, that's exactly what he did in the second moto, and he put on a performance that matched Alessi in the first moto, though Alessi would win the overall thanks to Langston. Also on a rail in the first moto - only to be derailed early in the race - was Amsoil/Chaparral/Factory Connection/ Honda's josh Grant. Had it not been for Grant's eartwheeling crash, the Southem Califomia speedster would have been right in the hunt for the trophies. To his credit, he did gather himself and race back to a respectable sixth-place finish after the crash. The top Honda racer was last week's winner Short, who made some good passes in both motos but just didn't have it in the tank to catch the front-runners. "I didn't have the speed to hang with Hepler or Alessi today," Short admitted. "I struggled a little bit on the starts and that's about it." Honda's top guy for much of the season, Mike Brown, on the jim's Cycle Center/Honda CRF250R, showed some signs of the old "Brownie" who led the points for the first portion of the season only to have dropped off the pace in recent races. Brown's Sixth-place finish in the second moto put him into the top 10 overall in eighth, just behind Yamaha's top finisher, Yamaha of Troy's Kelly Smith, in seventh. "This is my best finish this year, but I didn't catch Danny [Smith] to get into the top 10 overall [in the points standings]," Kelly Smith said. ''I'm working at it, though. I'm slowly picking off points here and there, getting better every weekend." Danny Smith leads Kelly Smith by six points for 10th overall with two races remaining. The battle between Cernic's Suzuki/Monster Energy's jason Lawrence and his soon-to-be Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki teammate Ryan Villopoto was all Lawrence, as he went 5-13 for ninth overall to Villopoto's 14-16 for 15th eN overall.
